Duties

GL-MDO-05 (Heavy Vehicle Driver):

The position is responsible for the operation of heavy vehicles, including but not limited to tractor trailers, buses (up to 40 passenger capacity) and refuellers, crew cabs, vans, trucks (5-ton capacity and greater), and other vehicles on departmental property and public highways and roads and under off-road conditions, in support of the department. Drives and operates passenger carrying vehicles up to and including 40 passenger buses in the transportation of personnel and baggage. Transports equipment on long haul driving, and loads, unloads and ties down heavy equipment on tractor-trailer units. Accepts receipt of cargo, loads and luggage, notes their condition and contents for proper placing and security. Ensures all required safety equipment is available and in good working condition. Performs daily vehicle inspections to ensure peak performance, as well as routine vehicle maintenance, such as visual inspections, lubrication, part replacements as needed, and cleaning vehicles and work areas.

GL-MDO-06 (Heavy Equipment Operator):

During the winter months, this position is required to operate a variety of heavy equipment (road grader, front-end loader (FEL), bulldozers, backhoes, excavators, snow and ice control equipment, snowplows, chemical spreaders, snow blowers, dump trucks, etc.) to remove snow, water, ice, and other surface contaminants from taxiways, runways, aprons, public access roads, parking areas, as well as drainage systems. Ensures all required safety equipment is available and in good working condition. Performs daily vehicle inspections to ensure peak performance, as well as routine vehicle maintenance, such as visual inspections, lubrication, part replacements as needed, and cleaning vehicles and work areas.

During the summer months, this position is required to operate a variety of heavy equipment (road grader, front-end loader (FEL), bulldozers, backhoes, excavators, dump trucks, etc.) street runway sweeper, tractor trailers, buses (up to 40 passenger capacity) and rig loads to ensure safe lifting methods. Maintains existing roads, clears drainage areas, and lifts heavy objects with fork trucks. Transports personnel and equipment, and loads, unloads and ties down heavy equipment on tractor-trailer units. Ensures all required safety equipment is available and in good working condition. Performs daily vehicle inspections to ensure peak performance, as well as routine vehicle maintenance, such as visual inspections, lubrication, part replacements as needed, and cleaning vehicles and work areas.

Intent of the process

The main intent of this process is to fill three seasonal indeterminate* GL-MDO-06 positions located at 14 Wing Greenwood, Nova Scotia. This process may also be used to staff future vacancies on a permanent basis (seasonal or full-time) and/or on a temporary basis (casual or specified period).

A pool of partially or essentially qualified candidates may be established through this process and may be used to staff identical or similar positions at the Department of National Defence.

*A seasonal indeterminate is one who performs the duties of a position for a period of less than twelve months in successive years of employment. For example, from approximately November to April.

OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION

One of the following will be required, depending on the position being staffed:

▶ Possession of a valid provincial or territorial unrestricted Class 1 (Class A in Ontario) driver’s license with air brake endorsement
OR
▶ Possession of a valid provincial or territorial unrestricted Class 2 (Class B in Ontario) driver’s license with air brake endorsement
OR
▶ Possession of a valid provincial or territorial unrestricted Class 3 (DZ in Ontario) Driver’s License with air brake endorsement

ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE

GL-MDO-05:
▶ Experience operating tractor trailers or highway passenger bus/40 passenger bus in a work environment
▶ Experience in long haul driving in a work environment
▶ Experience in performing operator inspection and maintenance on one or more of the following commercial vehicles in a work environment: 40 Passenger Buses (minimum size), 5 Ton Cargo trucks, Tractor-Trailer combination vehicles
▶ Experience in handling and tying down loads on vehicles or trailers in a work environment

GL-MDO-06:
▶ Experience in the operation of a variety of heavy equipment, including but not limited to: Dump Truck, Front End Loader, Bulldozer, Backhoe, Excavator or Grader
▶ Experience working in snow and ice control operations in a work environment
▶ Experience performing operator inspections and daily maintenance on a variety of heavy equipment in a work environment

📌NOTE: Some GL-MDO-06 positions may also require the experience requirements specified for GL-MDO-05 positions

▶ Successful completion of a vocational diploma in heavy equipment operation or equivalent from any province or territory

▶ Experience in road maintenance
▶ Experience maintaining unpaved surfaces
▶ Experience in maintaining driver logs, defect sheets and other applicable documentation

▶ Experience in supervision
▶ Experience using load chart regulations.
▶ Experience loading and unloading cargo
▶ Experience driving a bus for more than 21 passengers
▶ Experience operating a heavy duty forklift up to 10,000 lbs.
▶ Experience driving tractor trailer
▶ Experience providing training and individual evaluation
