This position is located in Gros Morne National Park, and daily presence in the Resource Conservation building in Rocky Harbour will be required.

Duties

Student Field Technician

Resource Conservation student employees will assist with a broad variety of activities related to ecological integrity monitoring, active management of ecosystems, species at risk protection and recovery, environmental protection, and ecological restoration. Daily work will include such things as field data collection, sample processing, data entry, equipment maintenance and installation, ecological restoration (e.g. tree planting) and site visits and inspections. The work environment is varied, including office work and a variety of front country and back country settings such as coasts, wetlands, freshwater, forests and alpine habitats. The work requires staff to be comfortable in the outdoors, including working variable hours (e.g. nighttime bat monitoring), in inclement weather, hiking on and off trail, working in water (e.g., wading, snorkeling), and travelling in field vehicles such as boats.

Intent of the process

The intent of this process is to hire students for summer 2025.

The results may also be used in the future to fill other temporary student vacancies that may arise in the Western Newfoundland and Labrador Field Unit, in various locations, with full or part-time hours for various tenures, depending on status of the selected candidate.

Operational Requirements
• Candidates must be willing to wear the Parks Canada uniform and/or identifier clothing and personal safety equipment, in accordance with Park’s Canada uniform policy
• Candidates must be willing to work a variable schedule, including evenings, weekends and statutory holidays.
• Candidates must be willing to work outdoors and be exposed to various weather conditions while performing work requiring moderate physical effort
• Candidates must be willing to perform work requiring moderate physical effort in back-country areas in all weather conditions, this includes hiking on and off trails through varied terrains. (i.e. hiking/guided tours in natural environments).
• Candidates are responsible for their own transportation to/from the work location – transportation is not provided.
• Student housing is limited in Gros Morne National Park and may not be available for all candidates interested in that work location

Conditions of employment

• Obtain and maintain Reliability Status security clearance
• Possession of a valid class 5 driver’s license or equivalent, if applicable to the position
