Duties

In the Preventive Conservation division, we work with clients to ensure that access to heritage collections, as well as their use, are sustainable over time. Preventive conservation refers to all measures and actions aimed at avoiding and minimizing future deterioration or loss of cultural heritage. We are a dynamic and creative multidisciplinary team that develops innovative solutions, tools and approaches to meet the current and emerging needs of the heritage community.

As Data Scientist within our team you could:
• Plan, conduct and initiate quantitative or qualitative research, analysis and modeling of data in support of preventive conservation projects and functions (e.g. risk assessment, mapping hazards to heritage institutions, decision-making, sustainability);
• Clean, process, and explore structured and unstructured data to extract actionable insights and enhance the dissemination and implementation of existing preventive conservation research and knowledge;
• Explore and visualize data to present the ‘story’ of data in a meaningful way to a range of technical and non-technical audiences;
• Investigate the cost-effectiveness of preventive conservation strategies, methods and approaches, as well as the use of artificial intelligence in preventive conservation.

Work environment

Working at the Canadian Conservation Institute means:
• Collaborating with a team of conservation professionals in conservation treatment, preventive conservation and conservation science;
• Collaborating with specialists in publications, communications and training;
• Working with clients - primarily with heritage professionals and institutions (museums, libraries, archives, cultural centres) in Canada;
• Maintaining close connections with organizations and colleagues from around the world to collaborate on research projects or to share their knowledge at professional conferences.

Indigenous communities (First Nations, Inuit, and Métis) in Canada are diverse and have customs that dictate the care and handling of sacred or other important items.
