Duties

Earthquake Seismologist

Conduct innovative earthquake seismology research to improve the understanding of earthquakes in Canada, and work with NRCan scientists and other collaborators to incorporate a variety of techniques and datasets contributing to the development of earthquake hazard models. Provide advice on seismic hazards and risks to other Canadian Government Departments and external clients, provide seismic hazard expertise for Environmental Impact Assessments, manage human and financial resources to deliver the above. As a government scientist with expertise in earthquake seismology, provide knowledge and advice after major seismic events to clients, media and the general public.

The Geological Survey of Canada (GSC), established in 1842, is the national organization for geoscientific information and research producing cutting-edge, authoritative geoscience to support mineral exploration, energy sector, climate change geoscience, marine and coastal resilience, natural hazards research as well as national sovereignty.

NRCan has transitioned to a hybrid work environment which offers employees the opportunity to telework and work from the designated work location, subject to operational requirements. This position will currently require an in-office presence for a minimum of three (3) days a week.

Intent of the process

A pool of fully or partially qualified candidates will be created as a result of this process to staff future vacancies. These may be located at GSC offices across Canada (Dartmouth, Ottawa, Québec and Calgary).

Education
Graduation with an acceptable doctoral degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a field of the natural sciences related to the duties of the position, or the employer-approved alternative for the SE classification.

The employer-approved alternative for the SE classification is an acceptable master's or bachelor's degree coupled with acceptable research, training and experience. The degree must be from a recognized post-secondary institution and in scientific fields and specialties related to the duties of the position. The training and experience must clearly demonstrate the ability to do personal research of doctoral degree calibre.

Productivity/Recognition
Productivity or recognition is required for all positions in the Research Scientist sub-group (SE-RES) (Revised October 1, 1999).

Productivity or recognition includes developmental work leading to the issue of patents, copyrights, or the creation of improved varieties, functions, or designs, and/or recognition by the professional community of the research environment. It also refers to recognized achievement in the form of authorship and editorship of published or unpublished reports, books, papers, or other communications resulting from:
• Research, experimental development, or tasking associated with operational equipment and problems;
• Operational research and scientific analysis;
• Planning, analysis and evaluation of Canadian and foreign programs in research and development.

Degree equivalency

Experience
EX1: Experience in planning and conducting research, including writing and publishing peer-reviewed scientific publications or reports.
EX2: Experience using computer programming scripts (e.g., R, Python, or SQL)
EX3: Experience leading a multi-disciplinary science team.
EX4: Experience managing complex research projects.
EX5: Experience in utilising and combining various and diverse scientific and engineering datasets for modern earthquake hazard or risk analysis.
EX6: Experience in processing and interpretation of earthquake data.

AEX3: Experience in developing modern seismic hazard models and risk - modelling impacts from earthquakes.
