Duties

If you are passionate person who loves sharing your knowledge and connecting with others, the Cultural Program Leader may be the position for you!

The role of this position is to create unique guided cultural experiences for park visitors, helping them to understand Saugeen Ojibway Nation’s relationship with the land and waters here.

The successful candidate will consult with community knowledge holders, research, learn, plan, write, and lead natural and cultural heritage programs and activities for visitors and community members in various park locations. This can include activities such as guided hikes, crafting workshops, big canoe paddling tours, culinary experiences, special event outreach booths, etc.

Work environment

Bruce Peninsula National Park and Fathom Five National Marine Park are located at the tip of the Saugeen (Bruce) Peninsula in the traditional territory of the Saugeen Ojibway Nation. The two parks are known for the rugged shoreline scenery, turquoise water, historic shipwrecks, and incredible natural diversity. Located just a few hours’ drive from the Greater Toronto Area, the parks welcome approximately 750,000 visitors per year coming for inspiration, recreation, and connection with nature.

The Cultural Program Leader will be a part of the 5-person Interpretation team, within the larger Visitor Experience department made up of 50+ employees during peak season.

This position is based out of the Parks Canada Visitor Centre in Tobermory. Hours are varied and include evenings, weekends and holidays.

Education:

A secondary school diploma or acceptable combination of education, training, experience and/or traditional knowledge relevant to position.

Degree equivalency

Experience:

• Experience in the development and delivery of nature and culture programs using a wide variety of communication, presentation, or interpretation techniques, such as storytelling, guided walks, demonstrations, crafting, theatre, music, props, etc.
• Experience in developing and nurturing meaningful relationships with people of diverse backgrounds, lived experiences and perspectives (First Nations, Indigenous, and non-Indigenous people)

• Knowledge of the natural and cultural heritage of the Saugeen (Bruce) Peninsula

Operational Requirements:

• Work irregular hours, overtime, weekends and/or statutory holidays and provincial/territorial holidays
• Willingness to wear a Parks Canada uniform and prescribed protective equipment
• Stand, walk, hike for prolonged periods
• May be required to handle wildlife and/or captive educational animals
• Work and/or travel in varied terrains, weather conditions, isolated locations and by various means of transportation
• Possession or willingness to obtain a valid First Aid and CPR (level C and AED)

Conditions of employment

• Reliability status security clearance
• Possession of a valid class G or G2 driver’s licence
