Duties

Deliver interpretive presentations, guided hikes/tours, public interpretation programs (children, outdoor theatre, etc.), activities and special events. Provide quality visitor services to the public, work with various point of sale systems, selling permits and revenue collection. Record visitor statistics, provide visitor information and respond to inquiries in person, by e-mail, and over the phone. Perform routine cleaning and maintenance of grounds and facilities.

Intent of the process

Parks Canada is looking for both English essential and Bilingual - Imperative Heritage Presenters at Terra Nova National Park. If you are an outgoing, motivated individual who would like to be part of our team to protect, preserve and present these nationally significant places to Canadians, please review the criteria below and submit your application today.

A list of qualified candidates may be established through this process to staff identical or similar positions within Parks Canada Agency, whose tenure could vary depending on the position being staffed (i.e. determinate or indeterminate) and whose language requirements, linguistic profiles and security requirements could also vary.

Education:

Degree equivalency

Experience:
• EX1 - Experience in paid or volunteer work that entailed direct contact and communication with the public
• EX2 - Experience in delivering messages/information to groups in face-to-face situations with the purpose of education, engagement, entertainment and/or motivation

Heritage Presenter bilingual position applicants must obtain intermediate level (BBB) evaluation results in reading, writing and speaking in their second language (English or French) prior to hiring.

Knowledge:
• K1 - Knowledge of communication, presentation and interpretive techniques such as storytelling, demonstration, theatre programs or guided walks

Abilities:
• A1 - Adapting in order to work effectively in ambiguous or changing situations (Adaptability)
• A2 - Communication through Interpretation; Listening to others and communicating articulately to inform, influence and involve. (Communication)

Personal Suitability:
• PS1 - Exercises sound judgment
• PS2 - Shows Initiative

Asset Experience:
• AEX1 - Experience in theatre/performing arts, heritage interpretation, teaching, adult education, museum education, or story telling
• AEX2 - Experience in musical performances

Asset Knowledge:
• AK1 - General knowledge of Canada’s natural and / or cultural heritage as it relates to the specific site or park.

Operational Requirements:
• Work shift work, irregular hours, overtime, weekends and/ or statutory holidays and provincial/territorial holidays when required;
• Wear a Parks Canada uniform as per the uniform policy and/or dress in costume as per Parks Canada requirements
• Work and/or travel in varied terrains, weather conditions, isolated locations and by various means of transportations;
• Stand/walk/hike for prolonged periods.

Conditions of employment

• Possession of a valid class 5 Driver’s License or equivalent for the province of Newfoundland and Labrador
