Duties

As an Interpretation Officer/Coordinator II for Nahanni National Park Reserve you will assist your supervisor and the Nahanni team in preparations for the summer visitor season. This includes a variety of duties such as: booking trip reservations for visitors; creating newsletters for stakeholders; developing training plans and delivery of training sessions; writing and presenting interpretive programs; assisting with special event planning; running online meetings, operating visitor reception areas; and planning/preparing for shifts in the park. You are responsible for supervising a team of heritage presenters and student staff on rotating ten day shifts both in the park and in the office at Fort Simpson.

During the visitor season work responsibilities include and are not limited to: daily cleaning and light repairs of facilities; welcoming and orientation of visitors; delivery of interpretive experiences; providing front line services for law enforcement prevention and visitor safety; assisting in a support role as needed in rescue operations, shopping, packing and cleaning of equipment/gear and storage areas for field shifts; leading group safety on guided hikes in remote wilderness terrain; collecting and inputting visitor statistics; responding to visitor and staff enquiries in all forms of communication; facilitation of visitor surveys; revenue collection; maintaining files and spreadsheets; facilitating security measures in the park and in the office; and maintaining excellent partner and stakeholder relations. Travel to the park is predominantly by float plane and you will work in all kinds of weather conditions and varied terrain.

Work environment

Nahanni National Park Reserve is cooperatively managed by the Dehcho First Nations and Parks Canada. Roughly 1000 visitors journey to Nahanni each year. It is a remote, aircraft accessed park about the size of the country of Belgium. Park headquarters are located in the village of Lįįdłįį Kų́ę́ (Fort Simpson) and a satellite office is located in the community of Nahanni Butte. The park is about a 1.5-hour flight from headquarters.

Intent of the process

This position is for a specified period of employment for an anticipatory 6-month term (May to October 2025) with possibility of extension.

The results of this process may be used to create a list of potential candidates to fill permanent or temporary vacancies that may arise at the PM-02 group and level in the hiring for the Southwest NWT Field Unit, for various tenures, such as: Indeterminate, Term, Acting Assignment or Assignment at level.

🎓EDUCATION
•An acceptable and relevant combination of education, training, experience or traditional knowledge relevant to the position.
OR
•A minimum of 2 years of postsecondary education.
Preference may be given to candidates who have completed greater than 2 years of postsecondary education or training in a related field such as, but not limited to, history, museum science and theater or live interpretation.

Note: Acceptable combination of education, training and experience:
•A secondary school diploma or PSC approved alternatives;
•Successful completion of a minimum of three (3) courses relevant to the duties of the position (e.g. courses taken through continuing education facilities, colleges, universities, professional or governmental organizations or employers including training provided by Aboriginal elders or groups that may include but are not limited to courses in heritage interpretation, communications, public speaking, performing arts);
•AND A minimum of 12 months’ experience working in the fields of education, interpretation, tourism and/or communications.

Degree equivalency

🏕️EXPERIENCE
• Experience in the development and delivery of cultural and/or natural heritage programs to a wide range of audiences using a variety of presentation techniques;
• Experience living, working, and/or traveling in outdoor field conditions (i.e. travelling on the land, personal recreation, field/backcountry/trip guiding);
• Experience in leading and/or participating in diverse teams and in working in cross-cultural collaborative contexts;
• Experience in providing coaching and mentoring to junior staff.

📌OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
The position requires the incumbent to:
• Work irregular hours, overtime, weekends and/or statutory holidays and provincial/territorial holidays (Employees will be expected to work a rotating schedule that will include working 10-day shifts in the backcountry);
• Live and work in a remote field camp setting with a small team for extended periods on a regular basis;
• Fly in and work closely with both fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters;
• Stand/walk/hike for prolonged periods;
• Be exposed to stress when responding to fluctuating, unpredictable visitor demands and requirements;
• Perform physical labour and lift up to 50 lbs.

Conditions of employment

• Obtain and maintain Reliability Status security clearance;
• Possession of a valid class 5 Driver’s Licence;
• Willingness to wear a Parks Canada uniform and prescribed protective equipment;
• Willingness to complete training provided by Parks Canada;
• Willingness to use safe work practices (training and terms of use provided);
• As the position is located in an area classed as isolated and remote, a pre-employment medical examination of an individual and his/her dependents may be required;
• Willingness to reside in an isolated post.
