In consultation with other technologists, CanmetMATERIALS scientists and stakeholders, the incumbent will support scientific research leading to the development of technologies that will benefit Canadians and contribute to the delivery of CanmetMATERIALS’s mission and the mandate of Natural Resources Canada. This, in turn, will contribute to the economic and environmental success of Canadian industry, and to the quality of life of Canadians derived from the value-added use of minerals, metals and materials.
Summary of Duties
➡️ Provide technical support for the development and advancement of the science and technology of material processing and alloy development to improve the performance of products employed in areas such as transportation, oil and gas, nuclear and advanced materials;
➡️ Conduct tests, pilot-scale experiments and laboratory-scale process simulation for measurements of metal processing variables and assessment of material properties, manufacturing performance and/or process optimization;
➡️ Organize and implement equipment calibration, routine service and maintenance;.
➡️ Review and follow required health and safety guidelines, processes and procedures in work activities and work site.
The intent of this process is to staff one 2-year determinate position located in Hamilton, Ontario.
A pool of fully or partially qualified candidates may be established through this process to staff identical or similar positions within Natural Resources Canada with various tenures (determinate period or indeterminate), various language requirements, various security requirements, various conditions of employment and for various locations.

EDUCATION
Successful completion of an accredited post secondary technology program in materials, metallurgical, or manufacturing engineering technology.
EXPERIENCE
1. Experience in planning, designing and carrying out experimental work for metallic material fabrication in a research or industrial environment.
2. Experience in collecting, preparing, verifying and classifying samples; selecting the most efficient testing/analytical technique to perform analytical tests and measures using prescribed standards and instructions.
3. Experience in assembling, installing and operating apparatus or equipment for use in a research laboratory or industrial environment.
4. Experience in identifying technical or operational issues and problems encountered during an experiment work or testing and recommending improvements to designs, techniques and procedures to adapt and/or modify equipment.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS
1. Experience in materials manufacturing using conventional metallic material fabrication methods.
2. Experience in maintaining and repairing basic apparatus or equipment for use in metallic material fabrication.
3. Experience in collecting, organizing and processing test data and using software to present analysis of findings in a numeric and graphic form.
4. Experience in working with compressed gases, acids and other chemicals.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
1. Required to wear personal protective equipment including but not limited to CSA certified hardhat, CSA certified safety boots with metatarsal guard, CSA certified safety glasses, hearing protection, and respiratory protection.
2. Travel outside normal work area is required periodically to conduct industrial trials.
3. The ability to operate heavy equipment such as a forklift and overhead crane.
4. Able to work around relatively strong electromagnetic fields on a periodic basis.
5. The ability to lift up to 25kg on a routine basis.
