Duties

The Computer Support Unit (CSU) provides technical support for RCMP Office Support System (ROSS) and internet workstations.

The Computer Lifecycle Management (CLU) replaces and repairs devices due to hardware or software issues, and evergreens technology and computing devices on a scheduled basis.

The Application Support Unit (ASU) evaluates and tests new software and hardware to work on the ROSS network.

Intent of the process

The intent of this process is to staff two (2) positions on an indeterminate basis, with additional vacancies anticipated. Please note the results may be used to staff other positions within the Informatics Branch, with various tenures and in different locations.

Should a Civilian Member (CM) be found qualified and selected for appointment, the appointment will not result in a change of status to the Public Service (PS) category for the CM.

Graduation from a two-year program of study from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in computer science, information technology, information management or another specialty relevant to the position to be staffed

Notes:

1. Indeterminate incumbents in the IT group on December 9, 2021 who do not possess the education prescribed above, are deemed to meet the minimum education standard based on their education, training and/or experience. They must be accepted as having met the minimum education standard whenever this standard is called for when staffing positions in the IT group.

2. Indeterminate incumbents of positions in the CS group on May 10, 1999, who do not possess the education prescribed above, are deemed to meet the minimum education standard based on their education, training and/or experience. They must be accepted as having met the minimum education standard whenever this standard is called for when staffing positions in the IT group.

3. At the manager’s discretion, an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience may serve as an alternative to the minimum education stated above. Whenever the minimum education is met using this alternative, it is met for the specific position only and must be re-assessed for other positions for which this alternative has been specified by the manager.

Degree equivalency

Recent* and significant** experience with the support and installation of IT equipment in an enterprise networking environment

Recent* experience supporting a local area network (LAN) and/or wide area network (WAN) environment

Recent* experience supporting a Microsoft Windows desktop computer networking environment

Recent* experience performing IT or network administration functions

*Recent is defined as experience gained within the last five (5) years.

**Significant is defined as the depth, breadth and complexity of experience normally associated with the performance of related activities over a period of two (2) years.

Certification for one or more of the following:
• Microsoft 365
• Microsoft Windows 11
• Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager (MECM), formerly System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM)

• CompTIA A+
• CompTIA Network+
• CompTIA Security +

Information Technology Service Management (ITSM) certification(s)

Project management certification(s)

Other certification relevant to the positions to be staffed

Experience imaging and/or cloning workstations

Experience or training with an incident management system and client support

Experience with or training in PowerShell scripting

Experience with or training in one or more of the following: C++, SQL, C#, Visual Basic, Python, Java, or other programming or database languages

Experience with ITSM, including Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL)

Experience with Novell Infrastructure

Experience troubleshooting Microsoft Outlook and/or Exchange

Experience with Active Directory and/or MECM

Experience with IT-based project management

Experience creating and reviewing technical documents

Willing and able to work overtime, be on standby, or adjust schedule with little or no notice to meet operational requirements

Willing and able to perform work duties in inclement and uncomfortable weather conditions

Willing and able to provide technical support to frontline policing operations in the field

Willing and able to crawl and work in small areas to install equipment

Willing and able to lift heavy or awkward items, weighing up to twenty-three (23) kilograms

Conditions of employment

Enhanced reliability status with top secret security clearance

Willing and able to travel throughout the service area (i.e., Alberta), including to remote areas, overnight, and via helicopter or fixed wing aircraft

Possession of a valid Class 5 (or equivalent) driver’s license
