The Library of the Supreme Court of Canada is home to one of Canada’s deepest and most varied collection of legal research materials. The extensive legal information resources, digital and print, and services maintained by the Library support the judges of the Court in the exercise of their duties within a bilingual and bijural institution. The Library is committed to innovation in providing comprehensive, open, and reliable access to the collection.
The Director, Library Services, is accountable for the planning, development and delivery of legal information and research services at the Supreme Court of Canada Library to support the research needs of the judges and staff at the Court. This includes the provision and stewardship of a bilingual and bijural collection reflecting the two legal traditions in Canada – the common law and civil law – and the curation of a collection encompassing the law related to indigenous peoples. The Director also serves as a key strategic advisor to Court officials on library and knowledge management issues and fosters the evolution of library services by directing and modernizing plans for the development of a digital library infrastructure. The Director is tasked with the opportunity to re-imagine/re-invent and steer the Library’s vision and role as a research library in the context of technological developments and the legal publishing landscape.
The Supreme Court of Canada (SCC) is Canada’s final court of appeal. The SCC is a bilingual institution that hears cases in French and English, in all areas of the law, such as family, criminal, and tax law. It decides cases from Canada’s two major legal traditions, common and civil law. Its decisions affect the lives of all Canadians. The SCC recognizes that a key element necessary in achieving and retaining a representative workforce is providing a supportive work environment and fostering a corporate culture that is welcoming to all employees, including designated group members. According to the most recent public service employee surveys, the SCC is one of the best places to work in the federal public service. Given that the SCC is not served by Pay Center, it has its own compensation team responsible for administering the full range of pay and benefit transactions in Phoenix and MyGCHR.
The SCC has implemented its hybrid work model in accordance with the employer’s guidance.
The intent of this process is to staff one (1) position on an indeterminate (permanent) basis.
It may also be used to establish a pool of qualified candidates to staff similar positions at the Office of the Registrar of the Supreme Court of Canada with varying language requirements, security profiles, and tenures.
