Duties

Fire Crew Members are a fundamental part of our Fire Management Team. These individuals help carry out the agency’s fire management programs through fuel management, prescribed fires and wildfire suppression services.

Intent of the process

The results of this process will be used to fill GT 02 and GT 03 positions and may be used in the future to fill permanent or temporary vacancies that may arise at the Fire Crew (GT 02) or Fire Crew Leader (GT 03) group and level, in the Banff Field Unit, or other field units, in various locations, with full or part-time hours for various tenures, such as: Acting Assignment, Indeterminate, Term, Assignment at level, depending on status of the selected candidate.

• Valid chainsaw certification through an accredited training provider.

Asset Occupational Certifications (Fire Crew Member)
• Basic Wildland Fire Management Course, Parks Canada Agency (PCA) or equivalent Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC) certification (S-100/S-131).

Operational Requirements (Fire Crew Member & Fire Crew Leader)
• Willingness to wear a Parks Canada uniform and prescribed protective equipment
• Willingness to work irregular hours, overtime, weekends and/or statutory holidays and provincial/territorial holidays, when required
• Willingness to complete various training courses and attain certifications
• Willingness to work and/or travel in adverse environmental conditions, varied terrain, isolated locations and by various means of transportation, including fixed and rotary wing
• Willingness to participate in Incident Command System positions as required and assigned
• Willingness to obtain certification in the operation of various forms of ground (e.g. all-terrain vehicles) and marine (motorized and non-motorized vessels) as required
• Able and willing to annually certify for helicopter hover exit
• Able and willing to obtain and maintain chainsaw certification
• Able and willing to obtain certification in the operation of various all-terrain and marine (motorized and non-motorized) vehicles or vessels, as required

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

• Obtain and maintain Reliability Status security clearance
• Maintenance of a valid Class 5 Driver’s License (Class L, N or other graduated license will not be accepted)
• Standard First Aid Certificate (or equivalent) and CPR certificate
• Will be required to undergo and pass pre-placement and periodic medical checks, including:
o Occupational Health Assessment for firefighters
o Meet and maintain certified status for the Canadian Physical Performance Exchange Standard for Type 1 Wildland Fire Fighters (WFX-FIT) in accordance with Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC) Requirements
