The resource conservation manager is one of three managers reporting to the site superintendent. The position is responsible for the delivery of programs aligned with the Agency’s mandate for protection, quality visitor experiences and public education.
The resource conservation manager is responsible for the following program elements:
• Supporting Indigenous cooperative management activities;
• Environmental and impact assessment;
• Monitoring and management of natural and cultural heritage resources;
• Monitoring for ecological integrity;
• Scientific environmental research activities;
• Visitor safety and occupational health and safety;
• Operational planning and implementation activities that support these programs.
The resource conservation manager is expected to carrying out the following activities in line with the Agency’s policies and guidelines:
• Working with Indigenous organizations and individuals;
• Financial management for procurement, contracting, planning and reporting;
• Hiring, performance management and training/development of team members;
• Demonstrating leadership in a variety of team settings;
• Partnering and engagement to support organizational outcomes;
• Exercising good judgement and critical thinking.
The work duties and program elements are characterized by significant complexity and scope. Past work history, experience, abilities, knowledge and personal suitability attributes will determine how well candidate can perform in this role. Usually, 2 years of experience in a leadership position in Parks Canada operations would offer greater success in starting in this role. However, those who have developed practical knowledge of policies, guidelines, time management, critical thinking and who are coachable could be considered candidates that may grow into the role in a relatively short period of time. Operational experience is a strong consideration for this position.
Nahanni is 30,000km2 in the Mackenzie Mountain region of the Southwest Northwest Territories. Nahanni shares a boundary with Nááts’įhch’oh National Park Reserve which was established in 2016. The park is well known as a premiere wilderness destination and well know among canoeists, rafters and rock climbers for its waterfalls, canyons, karst features, hot springs, and rugged peaks. The park is home to mountain goats, Dall sheep, woodland caribou northern mountain population, moose, bison, bull trout, migratory birds and Nahanni aster. The park is cooperatively managed with the Nahʔą Dehé Dene Band and the Dehcho First Nations. The position is based in Fort Simpson, NT. This is the location of the main administration office and staff housing. Fort Simpson is also the gateway to the park and lies at the confluence of the Liard and Mackenzie Rivers. It has a population of around 1200 people and is the homeland of the Liidlii Kųę Dene and local Métis.
Fort Simpson is accessible by air (two daily arrivals from and departures to Yellowknife 6 days/week) and two all season roads (highway 7 into Northern BC and Hwy 1 into Northern Alberta). Road access into Fort Simpson is by ferry in the summer and ice crossing in the winter, there are temporary seasonal closures during spring and early winter. Nothing a little coordination cannot overcome for road trips out of the community. Fort Simpson is a regional center that provides services to outlying remote fly-in Dene communities. There can be times where there is high demand for skilled professionals and competitive career and employment opportunities for spouses and partners can be available.
Long daylight in the summer can make for hot an dry weather in June and July, while winter temperatures are in usually similar to northern Alberta with some periodic cold snaps and the aurora viewing can make up for those colder nights. Amenities in Fort Simpson include a grocery store, hardware store, liquor store, post office, bank, gas station, cost effective daycare, elementary and high schools, library, gymnasium, fitness centre, ice rink, curling rink (both seasonal), swimming pool (seasonal), hotels, restaurants and bars, airport, RCMP detachment, volunteer fire department and health centre.
