Intent of the process

To meet current and future needs within the Department of Finance Canada.

Candidates hired will participate in the Department of Finance Canada’s Economics and Social Science Services Developmental Program (ECDP).

A pool of candidates resulting from this process may be used to fill similar positions with other federal government departments or agencies.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

Education:

ED1. Candidates must have or be working on a Ph.D. in Economics from a recognized university. Candidates who have not yet completed their degree must have passed their comprehensive exams (micro, macro, and econometrics) and will defend their thesis by the end of December 2025.

Degree equivalency

Experience:

EXP1. Candidates should have recent (acquired within the last 3 years) experience researching, at the Ph.D. level, one or more areas relevant for current research at the Department of Finance Canada including economic growth, productivity, macroeconomics, international trade, environmental economics, financial markets, monetary economics, innovation/digitization and public finance/taxation.

The Department of Finance Canada Economics and Social Science Services Development Program is a competency-based career development and progression program designed for the Economics and Social Science Services (EC) community within the eight policy branches of the Department of Finance Canada. The program aims to develop high-calibre individuals to the target level of EC-06 Advisor/Economist (salary range: $111,057 to $128,799) within two to three years. Progression through successive EC levels up to the target level is based on a combination of performance evaluation and merit assessment established for the Economist and Policy Analyst program stream.

Relocation assistance is provided on the condition that you remain an employee of the federal government for a period of two (2) years.
