Duties

The Senior Marine Inspector’s duties and responsibilities include the following:

• Inspection of ships for regulatory compliance, seaworthiness, and protection of the marine environment, and issue inspection certificates.
• Investigates a wide variety of accidents, pollution incidents, and alleged infractions of the Canada Shipping Act and Canada Labour Code.
• Acts as project manager on multi-faceted audits/inspections of vessels covering nautical, marine engineering, and naval architecture.
• Approves ship’s plans prior to construction.
• Audits ship safety systems, ship navigation, cargo handling and stowage procedures.

⚓ EDUCATION
ED: Secondary school diploma OR an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience; AND possession of a Canadian certificate of competency as a Second-class Engineer (Motor Ship or Steamship) or higher.

Degree equivalency

🚢 EXPERIENCE
For candidates with a university degree, Master Mariner or First Class engineer (Motor Ship or Steamship): Experience normally acquired in TWO (2) years in one or more of the following areas:
OR
For candidates who meet any other of the accepted education / certification factors: Experience normally acquired in FIVE (5) years in one or more of the following areas:

EX1: Experience in marine design, construction, repairs, operation, inspection, quality assurance or other marine related areas.
OR
EX2: Experience in technical or operational management of ships.

EX3: Experience as chief engineer or second engineer on ships.

If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)

AED1: A degree from a recognized university in naval architecture.
AED2: A degree from a recognized university in electrical engineering or in electrical technology.
AED3: A degree from a recognized university in nautical studies or maritime studies.
AED4: A degree from a recognized university in a field related to the position such as engineering, technology or physical sciences.

Degree equivalency

⚓OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION
OC1: Possession of a Canadian certificate of competency as a Master Mariner.
OC2: Possession of a Canadian certificate of competency as a Master Mariner, valid for use at sea.
OC3: Possession of a Canadian certificate of competency as a First-class Engineer (Motor Ship or Steamship).
OC4: Possession of a Canadian certificate of competency as a First-class Engineer (Motor Ship or Steamship), valid for use at sea.

🚢EXPERIENCE
AEX1: Experience as a chief engineer on vessels.
AEX2: Experience as an employer representative or health and safety committee member /representative with respect to the Canada Labour Code Part II or the equivalent provincial health and safety legislation.
AEX3: Experience in the development or implementation of safety management systems.
AEX4: Experience in the development or implementation of quality assurance programs or systems.
AEX5: Experience as a port captain or as an independent surveyor or as a surveyor for classification societies or Protection and Indemnity Clubs (P&I Clubs).
AEX6: Experience in design, construction or repair of commercial vessels or serially produced small vessels.

ASSESSMENT - GENERAL INFORMATION
