The Laboratory Technician will work closely with the Laboratory Manager, laboratory technicians, and other members of the CHARS Operations branch to see to the proper functioning and availability of the Canadian High Arctic Research Station (CHARS) laboratories. The laboratory technician will play an important role in the occupational health and safety department, such as reviewing procedures, conducting inspections, and applying corrective measures. They will collaborate and provide support to POLAR and visiting researchers, deploy and maintain laboratory equipment (microscopes, thermocyclers, autoclaves, growth chambers, liquid nitrogen generator, etc.), coordinate requests for laboratory space, monitor laboratory activities, and maintain the laboratory’s equipment, consumables and hazardous material inventory. They will also be responsible for some scheduling, providing orientations, supervising users, troubleshooting issues, supporting procurement of equipment and supplies, and other laboratory-related tasks.
Polar Knowledge Canada (POLAR) is responsible for advancing Canada’s knowledge of the Arctic, strengthening Canadian leadership in polar science and technology, and promoting the development and distribution of knowledge of other circumpolar regions, including Antarctica. POLAR operates the Canadian High Arctic Research Station (CHARS) campus and conducts world-class cutting edge Arctic research out of this extraordinary facility.

Isolated Post Allowances (IPA): The total amount of these allowances will normally fall between
$25,270 to $42,117 per year depending on number of eligible dependents.
Vacation Travel Assistance (VTA): The vacation travel assistance payment is provided twice per
year to the employee and each eligible dependent. The VTA rates are updated every 6 months
and rates vary for each work location.

EDUCATION
Successful completion of two years of a post-secondary program with acceptable specialization in a scientific field.

EXPERIENCE
EX1: Experience carrying out assigned technical data collection, compilation, processing or verification in a research environment

ASSET EDUCATION
1. Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) diploma or certificate
