❗️❗️As of September 9, 2024, and in line with Treasury Board Secretariat (TBS) direction, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) will adopt a common hybrid work model that will see employees work at their designated worksite at least three (3) days each week.

Duties

Physical Scientists in Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s Ecosystems and Oceans Science Sector contribute to knowledge of our oceans and to safe navigation through contributions to physical or environmental science initiatives, development of scientific information and advice, and coordination of scientific activities.

Key activities may include participating in collaborative ocean sciences initiatives with federal, academic and private sector partners; providing support for, and participating in, national and international committees and working groups on ocean science; providing data management, quality control, and archival; supporting the development and evaluation of numerical ocean models; developing products and tools for both internal organizational use and for partners and clients; responding to client requests; and developing and maintaining scientific software.

Intent of the process

The immediate intent is to fill various vacancies in positions located in Ottawa, Ontario and Dorval, Québec.

A pool of fully and/or partially qualified candidates may be established through this process to staff identical or similar positions, within Fisheries and Oceans Canada across the country with various language requirements, security requirements and tenures.

EDUCATION:
• Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in physics, geology, chemistry, or some other science relevant to the position.

• Experience* conducting scientific work or activities related to physical oceanography or another relevant environmental science
• Experience* conducting quantitative analyses and interpreting data using analytical techniques or tools associated with oceanography or another relevant scientific area
• Experience* preparing and writing of briefing materials, presentations, technical documents, or scientific papers on topics related to oceanography or another relevant environmental science
• Experience* using computer programming or scripting languages (such as, but not limited to Python, Bash, Fortran, Matlab, or R) for the synthesis, assembly, management, or analysis of scientific data or information
• Experience* working in or coordinating scientific teams, committees or working groups related to oceanography or another relevant environmental science.

*Experience: It is your responsibility to provide appropriate and detailed examples with dates that clearly demonstrate the number of years of experience that corresponds with the level you are applying for (PC-02 or PC-03) as defined below:
- Experience is defined as being gained through paid or volunteer work or completion of graduate-level research projects, in a relevant area
- PC-03 level experience is defined as being at least 2 years in duration

⭐️ASSET EDUCATION:
• Graduation with a Masters or Doctoral Degree from a recognized university, with acceptable specialization in ocean sciences, physics, biology, mathematics, environmental science, computer science, or some other science relevant to the position.

⭐️ASSET EXPERIENCE:
• Experience in the analysis of spatially and/or temporally variable oceanographic, meteorological, or other environmental data
• Experience working with collaborative programs, projects, or initiatives with other government departments, academic institutions and/or international organizations
• Experience in oceanographic and/or climate modelling
• Experience with modern oceanographic data collection, monitoring, observation or dissemination technologies/instrumentation
• Experience in scientific data management, including but not limited to tasks such as Quality Analysis/Quality Control of data to comply with standardized template(s), management of data archives, and creation of metadata using specified standards (e.g., NetCDF and/or ISO-19115)
• Experience in the development or maintenance of scientific software for data-related applications
• Experience in the development and/or dissemination of scientific quantitative data products
• Experience working within a client and stakeholder service focused environment
• Experience in the management of national geospatial data projects using GIS applications
• Experience using software version control tools such as, but not limited to, Git (e.g. GitHub, GitLab)
• Experience working in a Linux environment, including use of high-performance computing environments
• Experience working with scientific databases included but not limited to tasks such as SQL query design and relational database design
• Experience working with cloud computing environments and the deployment of scientific software, including but not limited to virtual machine configuration and containerization.
• Experience with designing web application for displaying scientific data to support data-driven decision-making, scientific research, or other similar purposes
• Experience with web services for disseminating scientific data, including but not limited to the Data Access Protocol (DAP), Web Feature Services (WFS) and Web Map Services (WMS).
• Experience in any of the following Hydrographic Practices: bathymetric data collection procedures and bathymetric product development tools: CARIS, HYPAC, Qimera or similar; water level and/or current data collection, instrumentation and QC; tidal water level and current constituent analysis
