Duties

Conducts highway/road clearing and snow removal using medium and heavy vehicles (wheel loader, grader, highway plow truck). Conducts summer maintenance on paved and unpaved roadways and performs a variety of highway/road maintenance tasks for the Parks Canada Agency. A Class 1 license with air brake endorsement is a requirement of the position.

Parks Canada is a federal government agency responsible for the protection and presentation of Canada’s outstanding natural and cultural resources through a system of national parks, national marine conservation areas and national historic sites in all regions of Canada.

EDUCATION:
Secondary school (grade 12) diploma or GED equivalent.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE:
• Experience in operating various large, heavy, diesel and gasoline-powered tracked and tired vehicles and equipment.
• Experience driving various sized light and heavy-duty trucks.
• Experience in the operation of a joystick-controlled grader providing year-round routine road maintenance.

KNOWLEDGE:
• Knowledge of road grading procedures and techniques.
• Knowledge of snow removal operations on paved and gravel surfaces.
• Knowledge of medium and/or heavy equipment maintenance.

ABILITIES:
• Ability to operate heavy equipment common to highway construction, maintenance and snow removal.
• Ability to assess and report on road, visibility, and weather conditions.
• Ability to visually inspect equipment, perform pre and post trip maintenance and repairs, determine the cause of problems and report them effectively.

Conditions of employment

• Security Screening: Obtain and maintain Reliability Status Clearance.
• Obtain and maintain valid class 1 license with air brake endorsement

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Willingness to wear a Parks Canada uniform and prescribed protective equipment.
• Willingness to work and/or travel in varied terrain, weather conditions, isolated locations and by
various means of transportation.
• Willingness to work irregular hours, overtime, weekends and/or statutory holidays and
provincial/territorial holidays, when required.
• Candidates may be required to undergo and meet the requirements for a medical
examination/pre-employment medical examinations and/or periodic medical checks.
• Willing and able to lift up to 23 kg without the use of lifting aids.
