Occupational Certifications
Depending on the position being staffed, occupational certifications are required relevant to the position along with specific experience. Examples include, but are not limited to the following:

SO-FLP-04/05 Barge Master/ Barge Engineer:
Valid Transport Canada Certificate of Competency as Fourth-class Engineer certificate, Motor Ship or higher with steam experience; OR Valid Transport Canada Certificate of Competency as Fourth-class Engineer certificate, Steamship; OR Valid Province of British Columbia Fourth-class Power Engineer Certificate or higher and STCW Basic Safety Training.

SO-FLP-06 Barge Master:
Valid Transport Canada Certificate of Competency as Third-class Engineer certificate, Motor Ship OR Steamship or higher; OR Valid Province of British Columbia Fourth-class Power Engineer Certificate or higher and STCW Basic Safety Training.

SO-MAO-Ship’s Engineer:
Valid Transport Canada Certificate of Competency as Fourth-class Engineer certificate, Motor Ship or higher.

Experience

AE11-Experience working or volunteering in a mixed public service and military environment.
AE12-Experience utilizing Department of National Defence (DND) Human Resource policies.
AE13-Experience working with a budget under the Federal Financial Administration Act (FFAA).

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

• Must be willing and able to work both scheduled and unexpected overtime as required by naval operations.
• Must be willing and able to work for long periods in exposed locations in all weather conditions.
• Must be willing and able to work away from home port for up to one week at a time.
• Must be willing and able to stand sea watches.
• Must be willing and able to wear and maintain a DND uniform, inclusive of CSA approved safety footwear and use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
• Must be willing and able to wear respirators IAW DND regulations and meet the standard of the DND Respiratory Protection Program.
• Must be willing to be designated and assigned duties as a member of the Nuclear Emergency Response Team.
• Must meet the medical requirements of Health Canada in accordance with the Treasury Board guidelines.
• Must hold and maintain a valid Transport Canada Certificate of Competency Fourth-class engineer, Motor Ship or Steamship or Third-class Engineer, Motor Ship or Steamship or valid Province of British Columbia Fourth-class Power Engineer Certificate – depending on the position being staffed.
• Must hold and maintain a valid Transport Canada Marine Medical Certificate.

Managers may establish other conditions of employment specific to the position being staffed. These conditions will be communicated to the candidates considered for that specific appointment.
