Duties

The candidate will have the mandate of developing, optimizing, and implementing state-of-the-art techniques for the assimilation of meteorological data of various types (e.g. satellite, radar, or other) into operational analysis and forecast systems of Environment and Climatic Change Canada (ECCC). The candidate will adapt various techniques to evaluate the impact of observations on forecasts. Expected deliverables include participation to scientific conferences and workshops and the production of scientific articles. At SE-RES-02 level, the candidate could supervise research assistants or postdoctoral fellows. Duties will involve collaboration with other members of the Meteorological Research Division and the Meteorological Service of Canada.

Intent of the process

The immediate need is to staff one specified period position in Dorval, Québec. A qualified pool may be established to staff similar positions with various tenure (specified period or indeterminate), language profiles and conditions of employment within Environment and Climate Change Canada.

EDUCATION
Graduation with a doctoral degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a field of the natural sciences with specialization in atmospheric science, or a field related to the duties of the position.

Productivity or recognition is required for all positions in the Research Scientist sub-group (SE-RES) (Revised October 1, 1999).

Productivity or recognition includes developmental work leading to the issue of patents, copyrights, or the creation of improved varieties, functions, or designs, and/or recognition by the professional community of the research environment. It also refers to recognized achievement in the form of authorship and editorship of published or unpublished reports, books, papers, or other communications resulting from:
a) Research, experimental development, or tasking associated with operational equipment and problems;
b) Operational research and scientific analysis;
c) Planning, analysis and evaluation of Canadian and foreign programs in research and development.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE
Experience in planning and conducting original research in the field of meteorological data assimilation for numerical weather prediction;

Experience in writing and presenting peer reviewed scientific papers (at least one first author article).

Experience in writing and/or adapting scientific programs written in Fortran or equivalent language.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS:

EXPERIENCE
Experience in radar assimilation;

Experience in the assimilation of infrared or microwave radiances;

Experience in high resolution data assimilation (5 km or less);

Experience in the characterization of observation and/or background errors;

Experience in the assimilation of surface parameters.

Knowledge of remote sensing of meteorological parameters (e.g. satellite or radar data);

Knowledge of data assimilation techniques linked to weather forecasting (for example variational, ensemble);

Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing;

Ability to write scientific programs in Fortran or an equivalent language;
