Duties

Case-manages, reviews and analyses client benefit applications and related supporting medical and non-medical documentation to evaluate evidence and render consistent and sustainable decisions on initial, reconsideration and ongoing eligibility of applicants related to departmental programs. Assesses the client's capacity to work on a regular basis as part of the adjudication process; provides peer review assessments and support.

Assesses and reassesses client needs and capabilities related to their medical condition and life circumstances and assesses their potential for vocational rehabilitation based on factors such as age, education and training, financial circumstances, response to treatment, diagnosis and prognosis, and motivation; assesses clients' potential for future and/or anticipated return to work.

Assesses and develops clients' files, including review and, where necessary, obtaining additional medical and non-medical information, when disability decisions are appealed to the Review Tribunal or Pension Appeals Board and may represent the Minister at Review Tribunal hearings as required.

Provides navigation services to clients, based on individual circumstances to other federal, provincial, and other financial benefit programs; and programs and services targeted to the specific needs of individual clients, families and dependents.

Participates in and/or leads project teams and working groups to improve program services as required.

Prepares briefings, reports and presentations to management; and, as required, participates in departmental and external committees and meetings.

Interacts with internal/external clients and stakeholders; provides information on medical and non-medical program eligibility.

Work environment

There is a regular requirement to sit at a desk and to operate a personal computer and related equipment to create documents. The work is usually performed in an office facility that meets accepted standards for health, safety and comfort.

There is exposure to stress from fluctuating priorities and from the requirement to provide timely, courteous, accurate, effective and efficient service to clients. There may also be stress related to the collection of information and the conveying of negative decisions to clients, many of whom are vulnerable and may be in distress. Difficult interactions with these clients may cause psychological discomfort. Functions may require travelling to meetings and to attend and/or deliver training sessions.

Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in nursing

Degree equivalency

Current registration as a registered nurse (RN) in the province or territory of employment, Entitled to Practise with no Restrictions; and a member in good standing in that province, as well as willingness and eligibility to become registered, at the time of appointment, in Ontario.

Candidates must maintain this occupational certification throughout their employment.

Asset Qualifications:

Experience in specialized nursing in areas such as psychiatric, medical surgical, oncology, neurological, medical rehabilitation or palliative care.

Prior adjudication experience with Canada Pension Plan Disability, WSIB, Veterans Affairs, private insurers, or other medically-based disability programs.

Operational Requirements:

Willingness and ability to work overtime as required
