Duties

General Labourers (GL) at AAFC may work in a number of different areas, including, but not limited to:

-Animal science
-Crop science
-Soil science
-Environmental science
-Food science
-General maintenance
-Pasture riders

Under the supervision of the delegated manager the duties will include, but not limited to:
Completing assigned tasks and following instructions related to area of hire whether it be field-based activities, greenhouse work, or handling and caring of livestock. These tasks may include driving, using and maintaining farm equipment, accurately collecting/entering data and implementing experimental designs as directed by the delegated manager and science team. Following standard operating procedures (SOPs) and adhering to organizational health and safety guidelines, procedures and directives are expected.

Work environment

The Science and Technology Branch (STB) is organized into three agriculture eco-regions to tailor delivery of national priorities to regional needs. Our science and technology transfer capacity is distributed across the country in an extensive network of research centres, farms, labs, and offices.

This inventory may be used fill full-time temporary, permanent and seasonal General Labourer (GL) positions at various levels for locations across Canada.

-Valid driver's license.
-Valid Pesticide Applicators Certificate of Qualification (or equivalent).
-Ability and willingness to work with chemicals and/or pesticides.
-Ability and willingness to handle livestock.
-Ability and willingness to work flexible hours.
-Ability and willingness to work shiftwork.
-Ability and willingness to work overtime including evenings and weekends.
-Ability and willingness to perform physically demanding work including moderate to heavy manual labour requiring bending and lifting heavy objects (up to 20kg).
-Ability and willingness to work in various environmental conditions including variable weather conditions.
-Ability and willingness to work in the lab/field/greenhouse/abattoir or other area relevant to the position being filled.
-Ability and willingness to undertake work-related training.
-Ability and willingness to control allergies, through use of protective mask and/or medication, and they must not impinge on tasks to be performed.
-Ability and willingness to be exposed to animal manure and other animal body fluids (such as rumen fluid, blood, urine, mucus, infections, semen and vaginal fluids).
-Must supply a minimum of two (2) fully fit, sound, trained working horses and related tack and equipment.
