► What is casual employment?
Casual employment is a temporary employment of 90 working days or less, in a calendar year, to meet needs arising from such contingencies as vacations, sick and training leaves, to conduct special projects that are anticipated but dependent of the availability of funds, etc.
NOTE: Casual workers are not subject to the provision of the Public Service Employment Act (PSEA). This means that casual workers are not eligible to apply to internal appointment processes. In addition, the PSEA specifies that the number of days worked as a casual worker cannot exceed 90 days in a calendar year within the same department.
ABOUT THE LAW COMMISSION OF CANADA
The Law Commission of Canada (LCC) was re-established in June 2023 to provide advice on improvements, modernization and reform for a just legal system that meets the changing needs of Canadian society. LCC will provide intensive and extensive research experience, as well as an opportunity to develop critical analysis and writing abilities. You will also benefit from mentorship by the LCC President.
An inventory for casual opportunities will be established from this process, which may be used to staff short-term vacancies within the Law Commission of Canada. These vacancies may require various language requirements, operational requirements, condition of employment and/or work locations not listed.

EDUCATION - EC-01 and EC-03:
Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in economics, sociology or statistics.
OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION - LP-01
Eligibility for membership in the Bar of one of the provinces or territories of Canada or in the Chambre des notaires du Québec.
EXPERIENCE:
EC-01 - Experience conducting research and analysis in an academic, training, professional, or volunteering environment within and outside Canada.
EC-03 - Experience conducting research and analysis on a wide range of subjects or issues.
LP-01 - Experience providing legal services (for example working on legal and/or legal policy matters) as counsel, articling student, or law clerk to a judge.

Applicants should have excellent research and writing skills, experience working in a collaborative environment, curiosity and willingness to learn, and a demonstrated commitment to contributing to the work of the LCC. Training in both common law and civil law, knowledge of additional legal traditions, a master’s of law degree, and clerkship experience will all be considered assets.

As various positions will be filled from this process, a complete statement of merit criteria is not provided at this time. The criteria listed are those requirements to be met for entry into the inventory. Should you be contacted for further consideration, the hiring manager will provide a copy of the complete Statement of Merit Criteria (SoMC) for the position being filled. At that time, you may be required to provide additional information to be used for screening and assessment. The merit criteria may be assessed each time using a variety of assessment methods in accordance with the position requirements.
