Duties

📝About the job!

As a Regional Director of Science, you will be responsible for guiding the implementation of DFO vision to support the government mandate at the Science Branch within the Region. You will be leading a large diverse team of research scientists, biologists, physical scientists, hydrographers and research technicians to conduct various research and monitoring activities that includes, and not limited to, ecological, physical and biological oceanography, multispecies and hydrographic surveys in marine as well as freshwater environments. You are also responsible for delivering unbiased Science advice to guide the decision making within the department and providing the hydrographic products to aid safe navigation across Canadian oceans. You will be delivering on these through various collaborations within the department and other federal, provincial, territorial governments as well as academia, stakeholders and Indigenous communities. You will also be responsible for managing a yearly multimillion dollar budget. You will be reporting to the Regional Director General and a member of the Regional Management Committee and National Science Executive Committee.

🎓 EDUCATION:
Graduation with a degree in Science from a recognized post-secondary institution

Degree equivalency

📌 EXPERIENCE:
■ Experience in leading the formulation and delivery of operational science-based programs in a regional or national context
■ Experience in leading strategic planning, policy implementation and change management for large and diverse science-based programs
■ Experience in providing strategic science based advice to senior management in a wide range of complex contexts
■ Experience in consulting, negotiating, collaborating and establishing partnerships with stakeholder groups from the private and public sectors in a wide range of contexts
■ Experience in working horizontally within and outside of an organization to achieve operational objectives
■ Experience in successfully leading the full range of management functions* (human, financial and information resources) for a large complex organization

Definition:
* Applicants must clearly demonstrate their experience in financial functions such as evidence of managing, allocating and being accountable for a budget. This experience is defined as being responsible for financial planning, forecasting and reporting. Applicants must also indicate the size of the budget they managed directly. The applicant must also for human resources functions include activities at the national level such as leading a multi-disciplinary team; establishing vision, priorities and work plans; establishing work objectives; promoting diversity and inclusion, engaging employees, dealing with performance/duty to accommodate/grievances/union-related issues. Applicants must clearly demonstrate that they have supervised staff, assigned work, managed labour relations issues, managed and assessed performance, developed and implemented training and staffing plans. Applicants must also indicate the number of employees they supervised directly.

■ Experience in managing teams in a geographically dispersed organization
■ Experience in representing Canada (chairing, co-chairing working groups, committees and/or heading delegations) in international organizations or fora
