Duties

The Chief Librarian:
• Manages the services offered, which includes reference services, interlibrary loans and document delivery
• Directs, coordinates and monitors the work of library employees
• Acquires and organizes documentary resources
• Develops information products, including web pages and research guides
• Highlights library services and coordinates training sessions offered to customers
• Represents the library on committees

Work environment

The DFO Library supports DFO scientists and employees across Canada. It holds a unique library collection on marine and freshwater subjects through its locations at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography (BIO) in Dartmouth, NS, and the Institute of Ocean Sciences (IOS) in Sidney, BC, and ensures that DFO publications are preserved, catalogued and permanently available via the library catalogue.

Intent of the process

The intent of this selection process is to staff one Bilingual Imperative (CCC/CCC) position located in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia on an indeterminate basis.

This process may be used to staff similar positions at Fisheries and Oceans Canada with a linguistic profile of Bilingual Imperative (CBC/CBC) and various tenures (indeterminate, term, deployment, acting, secondment, or assignment).

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

Education
Graduation from a recognized post-secondary institution with a master’s degree in library science or in library and information science; or
Graduation from a recognized post-secondary institution with a bachelor’s degree in library science or in library and information science for which another bachelor’s degree was a prerequisite.

Degree equivalency

E1. Experience in supervision and managing human resources (note 1).

E2. Experience in planning, organizing, managing and coordinating at least one of the following: (A) collection management including cataloguing/classification, collection development, collection preservation, (B) client services including reference, research or training.


Note 1: To demonstrate "in supervision and managing human resources", candidates must explain that they have experience in at least three (3) areas of responsibility related to human resource management : day-to-day directions; setting goals and objectives; determination of workloads; allocation of resources; development and implementation of training plans; performance management; disciplinary action; staffing; other related activities.

If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)

Experience
AE1: Experience providing research or reference services to a scientific clientele.
AE2: Experience writing library instructional materials and in using LibGuides to create research guides.
AE3: Experience delivering library orientation and training sessions.
AE4. Experience in managing projects in a library.
AE5: Experience using the Sierra integrated library system (ILS) to deliver library services.
AE6. Experience using the Summon discovery tool to deliver library services.

The position we are seeking to fill is Bilingual Imperative CCC/CCC. However, this process may be used to staff positions that requires Bilingual Imperative CBC/CBC. If you have valid Second Language Evaluation Results, consider including them in your CV.
