Duties

BI-02 Positions:

STREAM 1 - Boreal Caribou Biologist: Support planning and implementation of boreal caribou recovery, stewardship and regulatory activities by working with partners, including but not limited to: developing and maintaining partnerships, supporting engagement with Indigenous Peoples, stakeholders and the public, reporting and providing technical advice.

STREAM 2 - Species Recovery Biologist: Supports the planning and delivery of both field-based operations and desk-based evaluation as well as reporting activities to assess populations and address threats to at-risk species caused by human activity.

PC-02 Positions:

STREAM 3 - Nature Smart Climate Solutions Officer: Support program delivery for ECCC initiatives that incorporate Natural Climate Solutions, including partnership engagement, project development, and strategic planning to best achieve emission reduction outcomes and co-benefits related to biodiversity and the environment.

STREAM 4 - Stewardship Officer: Support planning and coordination of habitat conservation projects implemented by the Canadian Wildlife Service and conservation partners, by assisting with workplan development, information management, review of ecological gift donation files, coordinating communications materials, and other research as required.

STREAM 5 - Protected Areas Program Officer: Support the development and implementation of habitat, species, and/or infrastructure monitoring and management activities on National Wildlife Areas, including but not limited to procurement, field work, data management, and real property initiatives.

STREAM 6 - Regional Impact Assessment Officer: Support development, implementation, and communication of field-based and desktop projects in Ontario’s Far North to fill information gaps related to Impact Assessment processes with a focus on species at risk and their habitats.

Intent of the process

The intent of this process is to staff one (1) term PC-02 position in Toronto, Ontario.
A pool may be created and similar PC-02 and BI-02 positions may be staffed through this process with various tenures (indeterminate, specified period, deployment, acting, acting extensions, assignment, secondment) and/or security requirements (reliability or secret) within Environment and Climate Change Canada.

Education:

STREAM 1 and 2: BI-02

ED1: Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a natural, physical or applied science with specialization in a field relevant to the duties of the position.

NOTE: The courses for the specialization must be acceptable and must have been taken at a recognized post-secondary institution, but not necessarily within a degree program in the required specialization.

Education:

STREAM 3, 4, 5, and 6: PC-02

ED2: Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, with acceptable specialization in physics, geology, chemistry or some other science relevant to the position.

NOTE: The courses for the specialization must be acceptable and must have been taken at a recognized post-secondary institution, but not necessarily within a degree program in the required specialization.

Degree equivalency

Experience (ALL STREAMS):

EX1: Experience compiling, analyzing, and interpreting information from scientific publications, technical reports, Indigenous Traditional Knowledge, or primary data sources related to wildlife, habitat, or ecosystems.

EX2: Experience preparing written reports or publications on the topic of wildlife, habitat or ecosystems.

EX3: Experience working on projects involving surveying, monitoring, or management of wildlife or habitat.

AEX1: Experience working with external partners on issues related to wildlife management. Partners may include Indigenous communities, organizations, or governments, non-government organizations, or other levels of government. 1,2,3,4,5,6

AEX2: Experience using Geographic Information System (GIS) software to analyze geospatial data related to wildlife or habitat. 2,3,4,6

AEX3: Experience compiling, analyzing, or managing environmental data. 3,4,5,6

AEX4: Experience collecting data or samples in the field and use of field equipment (for example, GPS, acoustic recording units, camera traps, or other instruments). 5,6

AEX5: Experience working on projects related to Ontario bat species and habitats. 6

AEX6: Experience working on projects related to wildlife, habitat, or ecosystems of Ontario’s far north (https://www.ontario.ca/page/far-north-ontario). 1,5,6

AEX7: Experience working on projects related to ecology, management or conservation of boreal caribou or boreal caribou habitat. 1,5,6

AEX8: Experience synthesizing scientific information on the topic of wildlife, habitat, or ecosystems into plain language briefing notes, summaries, or presentations for non-scientific audiences (e.g., general public). 1,2,4,5,6

AEX9: Experience coordinating and tracking environmental rehabilitation or conservation projects. 4

AEX10: Experience supporting multi-jurisdictional or multi-disciplinary teams or partnerships focused on wildlife, habitat, or ecosystems. 2,4

AEX11: Experience planning and/or participating in field projects conducted in remote locations, where remote is defined as requiring travel by float plane, helicopter, or watercraft or, if by road, then at least 50 km from nearest all-season road. 5,6

AEX12: Experience working in programs related to one or both of the following: A. management of conservation lands or protected areas; B. acquiring or securing land. 3,4,5

AEX13: Experience assessing environmental effects or mitigation of proposed industrial, commercial, or other developments on wildlife, habitat, or ecosystems. 1,2,6

AEX14: Experience in recovery planning for species at risk. 2

AEX15: Experience supporting or conducting consultations with stakeholders or Indigenous people which may include: consultations or information exchanges with Indigenous communities/organizations, government, non-government organizations, general public, or industry). 2

AEX16: Experience working on projects relating to peatlands, including peatland ecology, function, management or conservation. 6

Asset knowledge (STREAMS 2 and 4) :

AK1: Knowledge of challenges in wildlife conservation and management including relevant natural, social, and economic factors.

AK2: Knowledge of the role of other wildlife agencies, non-government organizations, or Indigenous communities in the conservation of wildlife and their habitat.

STREAM 3

AK3. Knowledge of nature-based solutions to climate change and biodiversity loss.
