Duties

Successful candidates will be required to translate in real time from English to French or French to English mainly the debates in both houses of the Parliament of Canada. Some of the workload must be completed under tight deadlines. The work is done in the evening, sometimes at night. Here are the duties related to this position:

Translates a variety of often complex, urgent texts according to professional standards; performs terminology research to ensure cultural equivalence between the source and target texts and adapts texts to target audiences.

Performs terminology research and records the results to facilitate later work and expand Bureau terminology data banks.

On request, advises clients and contractors on language usage.

On request, revises or performs quality control on texts translated or written by clients, other translators or contractors.

Participates in multi-disciplinary translation teams assigned to special projects in response to urgent or complex requests.

Maintains business relations with clients.

✨Translation Bureau ✨

Established in 1934, the Translation Bureau is a special operating agency of Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC). It supports the Government of Canada in its efforts to communicate with and serve Canadians in its two official languages, Indigenous languages, foreign languages as well as sign languages.

It offers translation, revision, editing, terminology, language advice, closed captioning, and interpretation services to federal departments and agencies and Parliament. The Translation Bureau also provides online tools and resources to Canadians through the Language Portal of Canada.

The Translation Bureau is the center of excellence in linguistic services for the Government of Canada. It also plays a leadership role in the various spheres of federal government activities and increasingly stands out in the Canadian languages industry as a leader in language technologies due to its innovative culture.

Intent of the process

The immediate need is for English to French and French to English translators.

A pool of fully or partially qualified candidates could be established with this process to fill similar positions within the Translation Bureau with various security requirements, language profiles and terms.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

EDUCATION
A bachelor’s or master’s degree in translation from English to French or French to English from a recognized postsecondary institution or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE
Experience as an autonomous* English to French or French to English translator in a fast-paced operational environment.

*Autonomous : ability to translate without supervision or revision.

ASSET EXPERIENCE

Conditions of employment

Secret security clearance - ▻ The security clearance is not a factor at the screening stage but must be obtained before the start of work. If you do not have the required security clearance, the Translation Bureau will launch the process if you are successful in the competition.

The collective agreement provides various pay supplements (Appendix A) when employees are required to work evenings.

To recognize the variable and unpredictable nature of the work, positions in the Parliamentary Translation Directorate are eligible for parliamentary leave in addition to the usual leave entitlement.
