The proposed research project aims to use physical, geochemical and palaeoceanographic proxies of surface and subsurface sediments retrieved in coastal Nunatsiavut to reconstruct past sea levels and bottom water conditions. The data will be used to (1) characterize the modern phenology of primary production in the water column using sediment trap data, (2) reconstruct the sea level history around Nain using sediment cores, and (3) reconstruct the benthic temperatures along Nain using analyses on benthic foraminifera. The hired student as part of this PhD project will have the opportunity to participate on scientific cruises and/or fieldwork and will attend national and international scientific meetings. The student will conduct laboratory duties related to the project (e.g., grain size, sedimentological, geochemical, palynological) and write their PhD thesis as three scientific papers.
The PhD project will be supervised by Prof. Audrey Limoges (University of New Brunswick) and Dr. Alexandre Normandeau (NRCan). The student recruited as part of this PhD project will complete their cursus at the University of New Brunswick with numerous visits at the Geological Survey of Canada in Dartmouth. The Geological Survey of Canada (Atlantic; GSCA) located in Dartmouth (Nova Scotia, Canada), is a Canadian research leader in marine geology and has numerous laboratories as well as state-of-the-art analytical infrastructures. The University of New Brunswick, located in Fredericton, is a major Canadian research group in paleoceanography.
The intention is to staff one student position for the completion of a PhD in Earth Sciences degree at the University of New Brunswick.
