Duties

Successful candidates will be required to revise and sometime to translate in real time from English to French or French to English mainly the debates in both houses of the Parliament of Canada. Some of the workload must be completed under tight deadlines. The work is done in the evening, sometimes at night. Here are the duties related to this position:

Coaches a team of translators, advises them, co-ordinates their work and participates in assigning texts.

As team leader, manages complex or large projects and acts as adviser to team members and clients.

Occasionally manages special teams on specific major projects.

Performs quality control on texts translated by Bureau or outside translators, and revises them as required in accordance with Translation Bureau standards, in order to provide the best possible product and satisfy the clients.

Checks that work delivered by contractors meets the terms of the contract so as to recommend to the manager whether or not payment should be made.

Supervises terminology research done by the team and checks the quality of work so as to expand terminology data banks and improve product quality.

Acts as expert adviser to clients on all aspects of business relations with them.

Provides a final, very high quality translation of the most urgent, complex or important texts.

โœจTranslation Bureau โœจ

Established in 1934, the Translation Bureau is a special operating agency of Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC). It supports the Government of Canada in its efforts to communicate with and serve Canadians in its two official languages, Indigenous languages, foreign languages as well as sign languages.

It offers translation, revision, editing, terminology, language advice, closed captioning, and interpretation services to federal departments and agencies and Parliament. The Translation Bureau also provides online tools and resources to Canadians through the Language Portal of Canada.

The Translation Bureau is the center of excellence in linguistic services for the Government of Canada. It also plays a leadership role in the various spheres of federal government activities and increasingly stands out in the Canadian languages industry as a leader in language technologies due to its innovative culture.

Conditions of employment

Secret security clearance - Secret security clearance - โ–ป The security clearance is not a factor at the screening stage but must be obtained before the start of work. If you do not have the required security clearance, the Translation Bureau will launch the process if you are successful in the competition.

The collective agreement provides various pay supplement (Appendix A) when employees are required to work evenings.

To recognize the variable and unpredictable nature of the work, positions in the Parliamentary Translation Directorate are eligible for parliamentary leave in addition to the usual leave entitlement.
