Under the general direction of the Science Support Unit Team Lead, manage the Chromatography Support Unit, and provide research program clientele support for analysis of (but not limited to) soil, and plant extracts, as well as feed, livestock samples (e.g., blood, rumen, intestinal, urine, and manure extracts) and gas samples for gas chromatography and liquid chromatography, including mass spectrometry.
Duties include: conducting routine operation and maintenance of gas and liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry instruments, method development for applications of these techniques, data analysis and summarization. The incumbent will be required to develop protocols and standard operating procedures. Ancillary duties include maintenance of all Chromatography Support Unit equipment, management and procurement of laboratory resources including compressed gases and their associated tank components as well as other chemicals, supplies and client project samples. In addition, the incumbent will supervise and train staff as required, follow all appropriate health and safety protocols including implementation of risk assessments and safe working procedures, generate and maintain searchable database archives and accurate laboratory records of client project sample analyses. The position will involve direct interaction with AAFC scientists, visiting scientists, students and industry representatives to assist in the interpretation of results, and to contribute directly in the preparation of scientific publications.

The Lethbridge Research and Development Centre (RDC) is one of the largest facilities within Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's national network of 20 research centres. Located in southern Alberta, the centre was established in 1906. The Lethbridge RDC leads research on beef cattle production systems and finishing (health and welfare, food safety, microbiology); crop production (agronomy, breeding, genetics, pathology) and sustainable production systems under dryland and irrigated conditions associated with farming in a semi-arid climate. Research activities focus on supporting the long-term competitiveness of the sector while reducing the environmental footprint of agricultural practices and maintaining the health and productivity of the agro-ecosystem.
The Lethbridge RDC supports innovative research, development, and technology and knowledge transfer activities related to numerous agricultural sectors, such as Cereals and Pulses; Dairy, Pork, Poultry and Other Livestock; Forages and Beef; Horticulture; and Oilseeds.

Experience in the operation, routine maintenance and troubleshooting of instrumentation related to analytical chemistry (e.g., chromatography).
Experience developing analytical methods for specific research requirements.
Experience managing and performing quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) on instrument performance and analytical data.
Experience providing technical information and guidance to researchers.
Experience safely handling, storing, utilizing and managing hazardous materials (e.g., hazardous waste disposal, compressed gas cylinder acquisition, use and replacement).
Experience collecting, handling, storing and analyzing environmental samples.
Experience developing standard operating procedures and/or job safety analysis documents.
Experience with workplace occupational health and safety regulations and/or participating in workplace occupational health and safety committees.
