Duties

Under the general direction of the Science Support Unit Team Lead, manage the Vivarium small animal facility, support research programs requiring small animals for experimental purposes and serve on the local Animal Care Committee as the Animal Care Coordinator.

As the Vivarium Supervisor, duties will involve the management of Vivarium resources, including equipment, supplies and animal cohorts; ensuring animals within the facility are fed, watered and maintained before, during and after the full course of experiments; coordinating and carrying out research activities under laboratory and research facility conditions (e.g. Containment Level 2, livestock and small animal facilities), including careful synchronization, scrutiny and consistency of treatment for optimal experimental results; following established protocols and contributing to development of standard operating procedures; maintaining equipment; coordinating, planning, assigning duties and monitoring the performance of staff (i.e. labourers, students, casuals or contractors/consultants).

As the Animal Care Coordinator, duties will support the local Animal Care Committee (ACC) and include: protocol, report, and program document management; communicating information and liaising between the ACC, management, users and the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC); facilitating administrative processes for the ACC; membership on the ACC.

The Lethbridge Research and Development Centre (RDC) is one of the largest facilities within Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's national network of 20 research centres. Located in southern Alberta, the centre was established in 1906. The Lethbridge RDC leads research on beef cattle production systems and finishing (health and welfare, food safety, microbiology); crop production (agronomy, breeding, genetics, pathology) and sustainable production systems under dryland and irrigated conditions associated with farming in a semi-arid climate. Research activities focus on supporting the long-term competitiveness of the sector while reducing the environmental footprint of agricultural practices and maintaining the health and productivity of the agro-ecosystem.

The Lethbridge RDC supports innovative research, development, and technology and knowledge transfer activities related to numerous agricultural sectors, such as Cereals and Pulses; Dairy, Pork, Poultry and Other Livestock; Forages and Beef; Horticulture; and Oilseeds.

Intent of the process

Immediate need: one (1) permanent full-time position.

Degree equivalency

Experience providing care to small animals in a research or veterinary setting.
Experience providing technical support in an animal research, clinical or laboratory environment.

Diploma or degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with specialization in animal science or a related scientific field.

Degree equivalency

Experience applying the standards set by the Canadian Council on Animal Care.
