Duties

Work may be carried out in an office, laboratory, or field environment. The technologist will provide technical support for analytical, experimental, or investigative studies of atmospheric parameters.

Duties may include:
• Processing environmental samples in an analytical laboratory, including extraction, preservation, storing and measurement;
• Assisting with laboratory experimental and maintenance activities as per established protocols;
• Participating in field-based research activities including in remote locations;
• Conducting installation, calibration, testing, and maintenance and repair of equipment;
• Recording concise and accurate field and laboratory measurements; maintaining technical project and operational databases, records and reference systems, and collections;
• Entering laboratory and field records into databases and spreadsheets; verifying data quality obtained in the laboratory and field using prescribed analytical quality control and quality assurance protocols;
• Carrying out administrative activities such as maintaining supply inventories; training others in the use of equipment, conducting site audits, and liaising with site operators or vendors.

The Atmospheric Science and Technology Directorate within ECCC provides the underlying science and current state of atmospheric issues such as air pollution, climate change, and weather to inform and respond to the service delivery, regulatory and policy needs of ECCC and the Government of Canada.

Our atmospheric measurements on the physical and chemical properties of the atmosphere, including the ozone layer, air pollutants, greenhouse gases and air toxins rely on a committed group of staff that provide technical expertise in the field and the laboratory. Scientific Support Technologists carry out their work in an office, laboratory, or field environment supporting measurement campaigns or operational networks. Field work could be carried out at locations across Canada, including in remote regions and in the high Arctic. Conditions of employment include working outdoors in adverse weather conditions, travelling to and working in remote areas. The field work can be physically demanding (hiking in rugged terrain, long drives, occasional heavy lifting etc.) and long days where weather and field conditions may be challenging.

Intent of the process

The intent of this selection process is to staff two (2) English Essential positions on an indeterminate basis in Toronto, Ontario (4905 Dufferin Street). However, a pool of qualified candidates will be established and will be used to staff identical or similar positions with various language requirements (such as English Essential, Bilingual – Imperative (BBB/BBB) and Bilingual – Imperative (CBC/CBC) and conditions of employment within the Department of Environment and Climate Change Canada. These positions may be staffed on an indeterminate or temporary basis.
