Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) is the Federal department responsible for working with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples to improve their access to high quality services. Our vision is to support and empower Indigenous peoples to independently deliver services and address the socio-economic conditions in their communities.

The primary operations of Indigenous Services Canada, First Nations and Inuit Health Branch in Alberta are located in Edmonton. Travel opportunities throughout Alberta may exist depending on the role. The work performed can be fast paced and demanding, but also very rewarding.

The First Nations and Inuit Health Branch (FNIHB) supports the delivery of public health and health promotion services on-reserve and in Inuit communities. It also provides drug, dental and ancillary health services to First Nations and Inuit peoples regardless of residence. The Branch also provides primary care services on reserve in remote and isolated areas, where there are no provincial services readily available.

Intent of the process

This position may be staffed on a permanent (appointment or deployment) or temporary basis (term, acting, assignment or secondment).

A pool of qualified or partially assessed candidates may be established and may be used to staff similar positions at this group and level with various language requirements, various security requirements, various conditions of employment, various tenures (acting, assignment/secondment, deployment, term and/or indeterminate), and in various locations within Indigenous Services Canada, Alberta region.

Education:
Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution* with acceptable specialization in nursing, nursing service administration, nursing education or some other specialty relevant to the position.

*Recognized post-secondary institution: Public or private institution that has been given authority to grant degrees, diplomas, and other credentials by a public or private act of a provincial/territorial legislature or through a government-mandated quality assurance mechanism. For greater certainty, also included are institutions authorized to grant specific academic credentials for specific academic programs

Degree equivalency

Occupational Certification:
Eligibility for registration as a registered nurse in a province or territory of Canada.

Experience:
Experience in delivering public health nursing and prevention programs.
Experience working in the field of communicable disease control and immunizations.

Education:
A Master’s degree in Nursing or applicable sciences in a field related to health from a recognized post-secondary institution.

Degree equivalency

Experience:
• Experience in developing resources for the public and health care professionals.
• Experience in training front line staff.
• Experience in developing, planning, and/or delivering community health and primary care programs and services.
• Experience in the administration of and documentation of immunizations for all ages.
• Experience in the management and follow up of communicable diseases.
• Experience in working with or in First Nations communities.

Operational Requirements:
• Valid Driver’s Licence
• Overnight travel, for one or more nights, may be required.
• Willingness to travel including travel to remote areas, on gravel roads and in small aircraft
• May be required to work overtime on weekdays or weekends

• Must meet and maintain the security requirements of the position: enhanced reliability
• Must meet and maintain an active registration as a Registered Nurse, without limitations or restrictions, with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta.
