NRCan seeks an undergraduate or graduate student hire in the space of extractive metallurgy (materials science). The project focuses on basic understanding of the materials science of permanent magnets and the role of rare earth elements in them with the aim of recycling the rare earth elements from magnet swarfs. The successful applicant will be responsible for literature survey, data preparation, and working with researchers to better understand the structure of permanent magnets and extraction of critical minerals from their waste.

Education:
- Students enrolled or able to enroll in a program at University of McMaster (proof will be required before the start date) with specialization in Materials Science and Engineering.
Experience:
- Have demonstrated through experience in materials science research especially extractive metallurgy.
- Demonstrated experience in metallography techniques.
In the context of student recruitment in the Federal Public Service, the experience can be acquired through the studies, work experience, or volunteer activities.
Experience:
- Familiarity with advanced characterization techniques such as SEM, EBSD, XRD and TEM.
- Experience in organizing research data, reporting and publication.
