Duties

This position will support and participate in the unit’s bird surveys, including the unit’s work in remote portions of northern Ontario. Duties will include providing technical support in relation to acoustic survey technology, survey planning, logistics and data management.

Intent of the process

The intent of this process is to staff one (1) English essential position in at 335 River Road, Ottawa, Ontario for a sunset* term position until March 31, 2026. The position being staffed will contribute to bird-focused surveys and studies in Ontario, Canada, including those in remote locations.

*Sunset refers to a program with temporary funding. Time within a sunset position does not count towards indeterminate employment.

A pool of qualified candidates may be established and may be used to staff identical or similar positions with various language requirements, tenures (indeterminate, specified period, deployment, acting, acting extensions, assignment, secondment), operational requirements, conditions of employment and security requirements within Environment and Climate Change Canada in the Ontario Region.

In the event that an employee of the public service is qualified through this process, and there is a temporary need, he/she may be considered for acting, deployment, assignment or secondment opportunities.

ED1: Completion of a two-year post-secondary diploma or certificate program from a recognized post-secondary institution related to environmental and/or natural sciences (e.g. biology, ecology, geology, geography), or an acceptable combination of education, training and experience in a field related to the position.

Experience:

EX1: Experience preparing and participating in natural resource field studies.*

EX2: Experience collecting, organizing and managing data from natural resource studies.*

EX3: Experience identifying and correcting errors in datasets from natural resource studies.*

EX4: Experience using spreadsheet, word processing, mapping or presentation software.

Knowledge:

Asset Education:

AED1: Post-secondary diploma or certificate from a recognized post-secondary institution in Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

AED2: Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with specialization in a natural resources program.

Degree equivalency

Asset Experience:

AEX1: Significant* experience planning fieldwork logistics for natural resource studies.

AEX2: Significant* experience preparing equipment for natural resource studies.

AEX3: Significant* experience participating in natural resource studies in remote** field locations.

AEX4: Significant* experience participating in natural resource studies as passengers in helicopters or other aircraft.

AEX5: Experience using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to produce or to report results of natural resource studies.

*Significant experience refers to breadth and depth of experience that would normally have been gained performing the duties for a period of approximately two (2) years, and is defined as a combination of time spent doing the activity, as well as the type of work handled related to the experience criteria. While such an experience would normally be acquired over a period of approximately two (2) years, a shorter duration may be considered based on demonstrated complexity and diversity of work handled, scope of work, and/or level of direct responsibility.

** Where remote is defined as requiring travel by float plane, helicopter, or watercraft or, if by road, then at least 50 km from nearest all-season road.

Asset Knowledge

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

Conditions of employment may vary depending on the position to be staffed. They may include some or all of the following:

- Willing and able to travel; this could include travel to remote locations by small boats or aircraft
and for periods up to six (6) weeks at a time
- Willing and able to perform fieldwork in adverse weather and environmental conditions
- Willing and able to work overtime, irregular hours, and weekends on occasion.
- A valid unrestricted Ontario G-class driver’s license or equivalent from another jurisdiction.
- Successfully pass a medical assessment addressing the Category III Occupational Health requirements at time of appointment and at future specific intervals as required.
