This project involves assessing the potential for Interferometry from Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) techniques to determine vertical and horizontal land motion and the comparison of these measurements against the ones retrieved with Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) processing techniques. Under supervision, the candidate will conduct research to explore the introduction of radar remote sensing into the definition of dynamic reference frames. Key objectives of this activity include improving our understanding of the ability of InSAR techniques to capture land motion across different Canadian landscapes, its limitations and accuracy with respect to ground-based measurements. The goal is to assess whether InSAR can be used as source of data in areas not measured by GNSS. The workflow includes the selection of interferometric pairs and/or preprocessed InSAR products, the definition or assessment of processing parameters against the quality of the InSAR land motion products and the comparison of those products against land motion measurements taken with GNSS techniques. Results will allow improvements on the geodetic techniques used by CGS for the definition of the national and regionals reference frames.
The Canadian Geodetic Survey is part of Natural Resources Canada’s Lands and Minerals Sector. It is a national organization whose mission is to establish and provide the fundamental reference values used as standards for the measurement of latitude, longitude, elevation and gravity anywhere in Canada and to monitor motions of our continental landmass in support of geomatics and geoscience.
The intention is to staff one (1) student position. The location of this position can be at 588 Booth Street in Ottawa, ON or at the student’s home university remote sensing laboratory.
A pool of qualified candidates may be established through this process to staff identical or similar positions at Natural Resources Canada with various language requirements and profile(s), locations and conditions of employment.
