Duties

First Nations and Inuit Health Branch (FNIHB), Indigenous Services Canada, is recruiting a Registered Nurse (Practice Consultant) to provide quality, evidence-informed services, respectful of culture and intended to enhance the health of First Nations peoples in Alberta. Health Care programs are designed in partnership with community members and leaders to promote environments that support good health.

The maintenance of cultural competence and the provision of culturally safe care is paramount.

As a Nurse Practice Consultant, you will be part of the regional home and community care team providing clinical support, thought leadership and consultation to home care staff working in First Nations communities in Alberta. You will build strong working relationships and collaboration with First Nations Home and Community Care program staff, leadership, partners, and health professionals across the region with a focus on improving health outcomes.

• Provide clinical expertise to foster the provision of safe and competent care
• Plan, implement, and evaluate the education provided to home care staff
• Develop and implement quality improvement initiatives

Nurse Practice Consultants enjoy both autonomous and team-based work. Depending on operational requirements, they are assigned to work and travel in the various communities across Alberta, which may include remote and isolated posts, located in Treaty 6, 7 and 8.

Intent of the process

The immediate need is to staff a full-time indeterminate position.

A pool of qualified candidates will be established and may be used to staff identical or similar positions at this group and level with various conditions of employment, tenures and in various locations within Alberta.

  • As a nurse working with the First Nations and Inuit Health Branch of Indigenous Services Canada, how would you support and apply the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s calls to action, particularly those related to healthcare, within your work unit?

    This question will be used to assess the following qualifications:

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

NOTE: Candidates must clearly demonstrate how they meet the essential (and asset, if applicable) education and experience factors listed below by answering the screening questions at the time of application. Candidates should write concrete examples demonstrating how they meet the criteria.

Education:
•Graduation with a master’s degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with an acceptable specialization in nursing, nursing service administration, nursing education or some other specialty relevant to the position.

Degree equivalency

Occupational Certification:
•Eligibility for registration as a Registered Nurse in a province or territory of Canada

Experience:
Experience in providing home care nursing or primary care in one or more of the following areas:
• Continuing Care (senior living, supportive living or long term care)
• Palliative Care
• Case Management
• Chronic Disease Management
• Wound Care Management

If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)

Asset Qualifications:
•Experience participating in the development or adaptation of evidence-based clinical guidance
•Experience in providing educational clinical or practice support
•Proficiency in speaking a First Nations’ language
•Experience working in outpost or isolated/remote settings
•Experience working with Indigenous people or organizations

Operational Requirements:
•Willingness to relocate to Alberta
•Willingness and ability to travel to rural or remote locations on gravel roads or in small aircraft
•Willingness and ability to work overtime on occasion

Conditions of employment

•Reliability security clearance
•Possession of a valid driver’s license
•Current BLS Certification, Health Provider Level C (to be renewed annually)
•Continuous professional registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA)
