We are seeking a PhD student interested in forest resource analysis and management planning to work on a project investigating and developing novel resource and planning models to support the development of a unique strategic-level forest management plan. The successful candidate will join a team at the University of New Brunswick and Natural Resources Canada – Canadian Forest Service who are developing a long-term strategic-level forest management plans for a military base. The plan will accommodate military training needs, fire risk, environmental compliance (e.g. Species At Risk), and other values such carbon storage, while considering the effects of climate change. The project will provide the opportunity to explore and research novel analytical methods of land inventory analysis, spatial simulation modeling, optimization, and trade-off analysis for a wide-range of objectives and indicators. Results from this work will be used to inform land management locally, and to inform a national strategy for land management on military bases. The successful candidate will be encouraged to develop their own research questions related to forest management and planning that can be addressed in a modelling/simulation framework and/or with targeted field experiments.

Education
- Master of Science in natural resources management, forestry, landscape ecology, or equivalent.
- The student must be currently enrolled or willing to enroll at the University of New Brunswick as a PhD student in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Management.
Experience
- Experience conducting scientific research related to natural resources management, forest management, or landscape ecology.
- Experience writing scientific documents.
- Experience preparing and delivering presentations.
Note: In the context of student recruitment in the Federal Public Service, the experience can be acquired through the studies, work experience, or volunteer activities.
Asset Experience
- Experience planning and conducting scientific research in the field of forestry and/or forest ecology.
- Experience working with a collaborative research group.

Knowledge
- Knowledge of forest management planning.
- Knowledge of dynamic vegetation modeling.
- Knowledge of silviculture and vegetation management.
- Knowledge of forest planning modeling (e.g., using Remsoft or Patchworks software or equivalents).
- Knowledge of geographical information systems (e.g., QGIS or ArcGIS).
