Duties

Canada’s National Forest Information System (NFIS) provides information about Canada’s forests and on sustainable forest management. As a member of the NFIS project office you will be responsible for the administration and management of databases (relational and non-relational) as well as a member of the software development team working in an agile environment.

Intent of the process

The intent of this selection process is to staff one (1) permanent position.

A pool of candidates may be established to staff similar positions within Natural Resources Canada, for various locations across Canada, with various tenures (e.g., indeterminate, term, secondment, assignment), various language requirements, and various conditions of employment.

Education:
Graduation from a two-year program of study from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in computer science, information technology, information management or another specialty relevant to the position to be staffed.

Note:
1. Indeterminate incumbents in the IT group on December 9, 2021 who do not possess the education prescribed above, are deemed to meet the minimum education standard based on their education, training and/or experience. They must be accepted as having met the minimum education standard whenever this standard is called for when staffing positions in the IT group.
2. Indeterminate incumbents of positions in the CS group on May 10, 1999, who do not possess the education prescribed above, are deemed to meet the minimum education standard based on their education, training and/or experience. They must be accepted as having met the minimum education standard whenever this standard is called for when staffing positions in the IT group.
3. At the manager’s discretion, an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience may serve as an alternative to the minimum education stated above. Whenever the minimum education is met using this alternative, it is met for the specific position only and must be re-assessed for other positions for which this alternative has been specified by the manager.

Degree equivalency

Experience:
• *Recent and significant experience in database maintenance
• Experience installing and maintaining PostgreSQL in a Linux/Unix environment
• Experience constructing and optimizing SQL statements
• Experience in systems design and documentation
*Recent and Significant is defined as approximately three (3) years of experience within the last five (5) years.

Asset Education:
A degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Management, or Software Engineering or some other specialty relevant to the position.

Degree equivalency

Asset experience:
• Experience with Distributed and Redundant Database architectures
• Experience managing Geospatial Databases

Knowledge:
• Knowledge of Database Management Systems (including relational DBMS)
• Knowledge of PostgreSQL server installation and maintenance/administration
• Knowledge of Linux / Unix operating system

• Ability to problem solve IT related issues.
• Ability to conceptualize, design and document database designs.
• Ability to communicate orally and in writing
