The Geological Survey of Canada (Atlantic) is seeking 1-2 PhD or MSc students to complete research related to geological carbon sequestration, in conjunction with the Memorial University of Newfoundland. Research activities may include, but are not limited to:
- Petrographic analysis of potential CO2 storage reservoirs
- Chemical and petrophysical analysis of borehole core samples
- Reactive transport experiments for fluid-fluid and fluid-rock interactions
- Static and dynamic reservoir modelling
The candidates would complete their research primarily at the Memorial University of Newfoundland in St. John’s, NL, with the intent being that these activities will allow them to complete the research component of their PhD or MSc degree requirements.
Successful applicants will enroll in a PhD or MSc program at the Memorial University of Newfoundland in St. John’s, NL (https://www.mun.ca/main/about), in the Department of Process Engineering and/or the Department of Earth Sciences.
The intention is to staff one to two (1-2) student positions for the completion of a doctoral or masters degree, in either Science or Engineering, at the Memorial University of Newfoundland.

• Currently enrolled or willing to enroll in a PhD or MSc program at the Memorial University of Newfoundland, in the Department of Earth Sciences or the Department of Process Engineering.
• Graduation with a Master of Science or Master of Engineering degree with a relevant specialization from a recognized post-secondary institution OR graduation with a Bachelor's Degree in Science or Engineering with significant research experience in a relevant specialization.
In the context of student recruitment in the federal public service, experience can be acquired through studies, work experience or volunteer activities.
• Experience/knowledge in geophysics, geochemistry, and/or mineralogy.
• Experience working in a high-pressure/high-temperature geological laboratory environment.
• Experience operating rock and fluid characterization equipment including a porosimeter, permeameter, or capillary centrifuge, among other equipment.
• Familiarity with software packages and programming languages including Python, MATLAB, ChemStation, ECLIPSE, PETREL, CMG, Ansys Fluent, Simcenter STAR-CCM+, COMSOL Multiphysics, or OLGA Dynamic Multiphase Flow Simulator, among others.
