Duties

The Research Affiliate (RA) will be challenged by working with digital phenotyping of the following crops: Barley, Camelina, Canola, Carinata and Wheat.

The position will be placed at the Saskatoon Research and Development Centre of AAFC, but will collaborate with plant breeders and phenomics experts nationally from AAFC as well as Dr. Ian Stavness from the Department of Computer Science at the University and the Plant Phenotyping and Imaging Research Centre .

Work environment

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) provides information, research and technology, and policies and programs to achieve security of the food system, health of the environment and innovation for growth.

AAFC provides a dynamic, multi-disciplinary work environment with well-equipped plant breeding laboratories and facilities including greenhouse and phytotron facilities, field plot land and equipment, well-equipped laboratories for molecular marker-assisted selection, seed quality analysis and production of doubled haploids. The successful candidate will be involved in analyzing UAV images collected from AAFC Barley, Camelina, Canola, Carinata and Wheat breeding plots.

Intent of the process

The immediate need is for one student starting in October 2023, and a second student starting in January 2024. There is a potential for a total of four students to be hired for this project over the course of the next 2.5 years.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

Education*:
Currently enrolled or will be enrolled by the date of appointment in a Masters or PhD program at a recognized post-secondary institution in one of the following specializations: computer science and plant phenotyping image analysis.

Note: Must be currently recognized as having full-time student status in the academic institution in which you are presently enrolled, pending approval of acceptance or in the process of submitting your application. Proof of enrollment will be required prior to start date and must be returning to full-time studies for your next academic term.
Students should meet the eligibility requirements to enroll at the University of Saskatchewan.

Degree equivalency

Experiences:
Experience* with scientific data collection, organization, and analysis.
Experience* working on a multi-disciplinary team.
Experience* curating and analyzing digital phenotyping data in crop science field trials.

* In the context of student recruitment in the federal public service, experience can be acquired through studies, work experience and volunteer activities
