In a few words, we are looking for someone with a strong grasp of Tableau, design and at least a passing interest in programming, to lead Tableau projects with our junior Tableau developers, using data from the telecommunications industry (e.g., Internet service providers, mobile providers, etc).
In a lot more words, if you come work with us, you will be leading a small project team of two junior Tableau developers (and reporting to a manager). You will almost exclusively be working with data submitted directly to the CRTC from over 1,200 Canadian telecommunications companies, including their financial, subscriber and broadband/mobile coverage data. In your role, you will be expected to learn about the industry as you go, work with analysts from the CRTC telecom group, work with market intelligence analysts, and work with the team that is collecting the data. You should be an organized and creative person that is not afraid to work with developers.
On any given day, you may be expected to gather requirements from clients (analysts, managers or Executives); mock-up (with Figma) and implement a dashboard alongside your team for the CRTC website; mentor the Tableau developers on how to create more visually striking charts; support the market intelligence team by quickly creating a chart with some readily available data; work with data outputs from our data collection system or third party sources; publish your dashboards to the Communications Market Reports (e.g., https://crtc.gc.ca/eng/publications/reports/PolicyMonitoring/ban.htm) and much more.
Being interested in data, the telecom industry and designing the right dashboard for the situation are key to your job.
You will not be expected to supervise employees, just be an expert in your field and help mentor junior developers.
The Data Integration and Distribution team is a small, new team at the CRTC that works exclusively with Tableau, creating dashboards and visual outputs using financial, subscriber and facilities data from over 1,200 Canadian companies the telecommunications industry.
Because the CRTC is so small, we work very closely with the team that collects the data (who also uses Alteryx) and with the analysts that need the data to make informed decisions about public policy. It would not be unheard of for you to present a dashboard to the Chairperson and the Commissioners.
As a new team, we set the pace, the deliverables and the amount of innovation. Solid deliverables, vacations, and a real work-life balance (including working remotely) are central to our work culture. We are social but not overbearingly so. We respect each other, are friendly and truly enjoy our work (check out the Public Service Employee Survey results for 2022 if you want more information – filter for CRTC on the right of the PowerBi visualization https://hrdatahub-centrededonneesrh.tbs-sct.gc.ca/PSES/Report/EmbedReport/16?GoCTemplateCulture=en-CA).
A pool of qualified candidates may be established to staff similar positions within the CRTC with various tenures (specified period or indeterminate positions), various security clearance levels and/or various language requirements.

HOW TO GIVE YOURSELF THE BEST CHANCE OF BEING SCREENED IN
Your responses to the screening questions will be used as the primary source to determine if you meet the screening requirements. The resume you have sent with your initial application will be used only if the Assessment Board considers it needs to validate the information provided in this questionnaire.
FILLING OUT THE ANSWERS:
Each question is divided into two parts. The first part consists of a simple question requiring a YES or NO answer. If your answer is “yes”, the second part, your answer to the screening questions, will ask you to fully demonstrate how you obtained this qualification.
WHAT TO DO:
The most important part of your application are your answers to the screening questions. Ensure your answer to each screening question states: (1) the month and years in which you acquired the experience; (2) the job title and company/department in which you acquired the experience; (3) a fulsome description of how you obtained the experience.
For example, if you are asked for “Experience working with crayons”, a clear and complete response would be, “During my time as Junior Crayon Specialist (Crayons are Great Co., October 2003 to January 2023), I was a junior crayon specialist, responsible for ensuring that each crayon met our most stringent drawing standards. I was responsible for randomly sampling different colours in each packet by drawing my favourite animals, vegetation, and buildings. I was required to carefully analyse the marks left by individual strokes and overlapping strokes, identifying any erroneous colour mixtures and chunky leftover marks. I was then required to summarize my findings in a central database (using Excel) and submit my aggregated weekly findings to my supervisor.”
WHAT NOT TO DO:
DO NOT send a cover letter; cover letters will not be reviewed. Only the answers provided to the screening questions will be considered in the application.
In your answers, do not write “refer to resumé”, restate the question, and/or provides no insight into how you gained the experience, it will be considered a non-response.
COMMUNICATIONS:
Communication for this process will be sent via email. It is the responsibility of the candidate to ensure accurate contact information is provided on your resume AND your jobs.gc.ca account, and updated as required. Candidates who apply to this selection process should include an email address that accepts emails from unknown users (some email systems block these types of email).
OTHER:
At a later date, we will ask for screenshots and/or links to your Tableau dashboards and/or infographics.
A random or top-down selection of candidates may be used in the determination of those to be given further consideration in the assessment process.
Preference will be given to veterans first and then to Canadian citizens and permanent residents, with the exception of a job located in Nunavut, where Nunavut Inuit will be appointed first.
Information on the preference to veterans
We thank all those who apply. Only those selected for further consideration will be contacted.
