Duties

Duties include performing experiments in greenhouse entomology and involves both laboratory and greenhouse research components, insect colony maintenance, analyzing data and writing reports and manuscripts as well as a thesis describing the background literature, the methodology and the results obtained.

The student must be willing to complete experiments in a timely fashion, including working on week-ends or evenings if the experiment so requires. As well, the student must be willing to do some commercial greenhouse trials involving travel to local greenhouse facilities.

Work environment

This position is for a graduate student in Entomology/Biology. The student will conduct research at AAFC Harrow Research and Development Centre (Harrow RDC). The Harrow RDC located in Harrow, Ontario was established in 1909. It is the largest greenhouse research complex facility in North America, and is one of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's (AAFC) network of 20 research and development centers.

Harrow RDC develops and transfers new technologies for the production and protection of greenhouse vegetables and field crops, including soybeans, dry beans, corn, winter wheat and tomatoes. It is a lead contributor in research on the quality and sustainable use of Ontario soils as methods to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and nutrient losses from agricultural soils. This activity enhances the environmental health of farmlands in the Great Lakes basin.

The Harrow RDC is one of seven sites where field and greenhouse trials on potential pest management tools and technologies are conducted for AAFC’s Minor Use Pesticide Program.

Education*:
Currently enrolled or will be enrolled by the date of appointment in a PhD program in a recognized post-secondary academic institution with specialization in: biology, ecology, pest management, agriculture, entomology or in a discipline related to the position study subject.

Note: Must be currently recognized as having full-time student status in the academic institution in which you are presently enrolled, pending approval of acceptance or in the process of submitting your application. Proof of enrollment will be required prior to start date and must be returning to full-time studies for your next academic term.

Degree equivalency

Experience:
Experience* in designing experiments and developing methodologies.
Experience* in handling organisms or experience working with arthropods.
