Work environment

The Canadian Coast Guard College is a national maritime training facility located on scenic Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. It’s a national college that provides training and services in French and English. It delivers programs to support the College’s mission and mandate in marine safety, security and environmental protection.

The college’s unique and specialized training is sought after by organizations around the world. Each year, highly trained graduates join their colleagues as Coast Guard officers to provide services that are critical to Canadians.

Intent of the process

The current need is to staff a Superintendent of Science and Languages position. However, this process will also be used to create a pool of qualified candidates in the other streams.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

EDUCATION:
Stream 1 - Superintendent of Marine Engineering:
- Diploma from a Nautical College or a Degree from a recognized postsecondary institution with an acceptable specialization that is relevant to the position.
- A First-Class Engineering Certificate or meeting the requirement for registration as a Professional Engineer in the Province of Nova Scotia.

Stream 2 - Superintendent of Marine Navigation:
- Diploma from a Nautical College or a Degree from a recognized postsecondary institution with an acceptable specialization that is relevant to the position.
- A Master’s Mariner Certificate or a Master, Near Coastal certificate with all exemptions required for a Master Mariner Certificate.

Stream 3 - Superintendent of Operational Training:
- Diploma from a Nautical College or a Degree from a recognized postsecondary insitution with an acceptable specialization that is relevant to the position.

Stream 4 - Superintendent of Officer Cadets:
- Diploma from a Nautical College or a Degree from a recognized postsecondary insitution with an acceptable specialization that is relevant to the position.

Stream 5 - Superintendent of Science and Languages:
Degree from a recognized postsecondary institution with an acceptable specialization that is relevant to the position.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE (All Streams):
- Significant* experience in the delivery of a marine operations-oriented program and/or experience in planning, developing, and evaluating course curriculum and/or planning activities related to the improvement of training and instruction.
- Experience in providing strategic advice on complex** issues and recommending options to management.
- Experience in managing human and financial resources.

*Significant experience is understood to mean the depth and breadth of the experience by performing a broad range of various related activities for approximately two (2) full years.

**Complex issues are issues with at least two (2) of the following characteristics: multi-dimensional, multi-jurisdictional, sensitive, confidential, affecting many partners or stakeholders, precedent setting or having a major impact on the public service or financially challenging.

EDUCATION (ASSET):
Post-graduate degree from a recognized postsecondary institution that is relevant to the position.
Teaching qualifications (including a relevant degree) incorporating training in instructional techniques, educational technology and evaluation methods.

Degree equivalency

OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION (ASSET):
Possession of a valid Transport Canada STCW Continued Proficiency Endorsement.

EXPERIENCE (ASSET):
Experience in training in a field related to the maritime domain.
