No day is the same. Each day offers opportunities to expand your knowledge and work on new issues while having the ability to specialize on select files to increase your depth of understanding.✨

Careers in Media Relations provide unique cross-departmental knowledge and help grow your career by strengthening key merit criteria including: providing strategic communications advice directly to Senior Management, Ministers Offices and the Privy Council Office; writing media responses; managing priorities, working under pressure and meeting tight deadlines; identifying and anticipating communication issues and risks; collaborating with partners and exercising judgement.

Media Relations services include: interacting and providing responses to journalists; triaging media inquiries and interview requests; researching and providing advice; developing media responses and approaches; and coordinating approvals. Members of the team regularly liaise with communications colleagues, senior management, Minister’s offices, and other Federal Departments to provide advice and support.

Media Monitoring services include: daily media clippings reports, transcripts and analysis of traditional and social media coverage related to departmental files and issues.

The Public Affairs Directorate supports three (3) Ministers’ Offices and two (2) departments, Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada (CIRNAC) and Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) in providing coordinated, clear and responsive communications that respond to the needs of Indigenous Peoples, partners and the public. The Public Affairs Directorate consists of three teams responsible for Media Monitoring and Media Relations; Ministerial Liaison; and Writing Services.

🎓 EDUCATION
A degree from a recognized post-secondary institution.

Notes:
1. Based on education, training and/or experience, indeterminate incumbents of positions in the IS classification are deemed to meet the minimum education standard whenever a bachelor’s degree without specialization is called for in a position classified as IS.
2. At the manager’s discretion, an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience, may serve as an alternative to the minimum education standard.

Degree equivalency

📌 EXPERIENCE
1- Experience in providing strategic communications advice to clients, supervisors or management.
2- Experience in one or more of these areas of communications: media relations, issues management, media monitoring, ministerial liaison, speechwriting or public affairs.
3- Experience in researching, developing and revising communications products (e.g. media responses, fact sheets, backgrounders, key messages, speeches, news releases, media advisories, media summaries, media lines, issues monitoring reports, event plans or communications plans).
