We are the Canada Wildlife Service (CWS) - Canada’s national wildlife organization. Our central area of focus is on the protection and management of migratory birds, non-aquatic species at risk and their nationally important habitats. The various positions will work in a team environment that deliver a variety of programs including regional engagement with partners and stakeholders on stewardship, project management and funding initiatives, terrestrial and aquatic wildlife monitoring and assessment, landscape and geospatial analysis, planning, evaluating, and implementing nature-based solutions for greenhouse gas emission reduction, effecting wildlife conservation permitting activities, and informing regional impact assessments. The team is a fun, adaptable and innovative group so you will be encouraged to be creative, connected, and curious. Depending on the position, your duties could range from planning and leading fieldwork, to reviewing and contributing to policy, or to building partnerships with stakeholders to extend the influence of our programs. You will meet and work with many different partners and stakeholders and you will also work with national program teams to share the regional perspective, contribute to national policies, and coordinate projects.
The intent of the process is to staff one (1) position immediately.
A partially or fully qualified pool of candidates will be established to staff similar positions within the Canadian Wildlife Service Ontario region with various tenures (indeterminate, specified period, deployment, acting, acting extensions, assignment, secondment), various linguistic requirements, various conditions of employment and/or operational requirements.

EXPERIENCE (ALL STREAMS):
EX1. Significant experience* leading the planning and implementation of a habitat conservation, species at risk, migratory bird or protected area project.
EX2. Significant experience* leading the analysis of information on ecosystems, habitats or species.
EX3. Significant experience* providing scientific advice or technical advice and formulating recommendations to advise decision makers on ecosystems, habitats or species conservation projects.
EX4. Experience** collaborating*** with officials from the federal government, provincial government, Indigenous groups, municipalities, or industry on environmental issues.
EX5. Experience** supervising staff, other temporary employees or students.
EX6. Experience** in developing, revising, or interpreting natural resource or conservation policies, plans, or regulations.

EDUCATION:
STREAM 1 (BI-03):
ED1. Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a natural, physical or applied science with specialization in a field relevant to the duties of the position.
Note: The courses for the specialization must be acceptable and must have been taken at a recognized post-secondary institution, but not necessarily within a degree program in the required specialization.
STREAM 2 (PC-03):
ED2. Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, with acceptable specialization in physics, geology, chemistry or some other science relevant to the position.
Note: The courses for the specialization must be acceptable and must have been taken at a recognized post-secondary institution, but not necessarily within a degree program in the required specialization.
KNOWLEDGE (ALL STREAMS):

Based on the hiring division’s needs, the following listed asset qualifications and operational requirements may be identified and applied during the assessment and/or selection of candidates.
ASSET EDUCATION (ALL STREAMS):
AED1. Graduation with an advanced degree (Masters, Doctorate) from a recognized post-secondary institution with a specialization relevant to the position to be staffed.
ASSET EXPERIENCE (ALL STREAMS):
AEX1. Experience utilizing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and the Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. (ESRI) suite of products.
AEX2. Experience working with Indigenous peoples.
AEX3. Experience with financial project management or negotiating a financial contribution agreement.
AEX4. Experience leading recovery planning or action planning for species at risk or protected area management planning or habitat monitoring planning.
AEX5. Experience working with government policies, industry practices, or legislation/regulations in the forestry, agriculture, or urban development sectors to drive planning or decision making for conservation initiatives.
AEX6. Experience in negotiating agreements, Memoranda of Understanding or partnerships for wildlife or habitat conservation.
AEX7. Experience utilizing ecological, geological, or planning information to conduct landscape-scale analyses and inform decision-making.
AEX8. Experience leading habitat restoration projects in wetland or grassland ecosystems.
AEX9. Experience in the process of protecting land for conservation purposes, including fee-simple acquisition, registration of conservation easements, designation or establishment of Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measures (OECMs), or other mechanisms resulting in perpetual protection.
AEX10. Experience planning and leading programs or projects with a strong field component and a focus on habitat conservation, species at risk, migratory birds, protected areas, or other topics relevant to the position.
AEX11. Experience participating in environmental / impact assessment processes for development projects.
AEX12. Experience maintaining relational databases and implementing information management best practices.
ASSET KNOWLEDGE (ALL STREAMS):
AK1. Knowledge of carbon accounting processes and the impact of conservation activities, including avoided conversion and habitat restoration, on greenhouse gas emission reduction.
AK2. Knowledge of municipal, regional, provincial or territorial land-use planning processes, and how land-use planning, including that of the forest, development, resource extraction, or agricultural sectors, impacts biodiversity, habitat conservation, or climate change mitigation/adaptation.
