❗️ Numerous positions are to be staffed, which will be located in Vancouver, Halifax or Quebec City. NOTE: Although the duties may be performed in different cities, the position will report to Ottawa and will be performing the duties full-time on-site. This does not imply tele-work; rather it means working from one of the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS) shipyard contracted to deliver CCG's large vessels.

More specifically, the Polar Icebreaker (VSY) Team is looking to hire a Senior Project Engineer (ENG-04) to work full time on-site in North Vancouver, with future positions potentially being available in Halifax and Quebec City to support other Canadian Coast Guard projects.

As a Senior Project Engineer (On-Site) within Vessel Procurement, you will be the Project’s eyes and ears on the ground and will play a fundamental role in assessing and managing the shipyard’s progress on contracted work and fostering open lines of communication. In addition, your responsibilities will include providing technical support, based on your relevant area of expertise, to assist in the design and build of these future vessels.

Along with a strong technical skill set, the ideal candidate for this position would have strong interpersonal skills to build those relationships with the shipyard and thrive on working independently as the key Polar Icebreaker Project representative on-site.

The ideal candidate will be experienced at:
• Providing engineering services in a marine construction environment in either Mechanical,
Electrical or Naval Architecture fields;
• Presenting updates and concerns to management for action and/or direction; and
• Liaising with shipyard and subcontractor representatives to keep up-to-date on work progress
and to resolve outstanding issues.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) leads the management of Canada’s fisheries and the safeguarding of Canadian waters. The Canadian Coast Guard (CCG), a Special Operating Agency within DFO, is responsible for services and programs that contribute to the safety, security, and accessibility of Canada’s waterways. With over 10,000 dedicated employees in over 400 locations across Canada, our Department is often the only federal presence in smaller coastal and remote communities.
The Vessel Procurement directorate is responsible for the management of the design and construction of new large and small vessels, air cushioned vehicles, helicopters, and small craft to support the operational requirements identified in the Coast Guard Fleet Renewal Plan. The directorate is composed of several projects that must deliver various classes of vessels and aircraft as announced under the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS). It is a dynamic and challenging environment where your contribution will enable the CCG to deliver critical services to Canadians who make use of our waterways.

Intent of the process

This appointment process will initially be used to staff one (1) indeterminate position in North Vancouver, British Columbia (English Essential) with other future anticipated positions in Halifax, Nova Scotia (English Essential) and Quebec, Quebec City (Bilingual Imperative BBB/BBB).

A pool of partially qualified candidates will be established from this selection process and may be used to staff positions with various tenures, various linguistic profiles as well as various security clearances within the core public administration with the approval of DFO and the CCG hiring managers.

EDUCATION:
◾ Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in naval architecture, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or some other engineering specialty relevant to the duties of the position.

Degree equivalency

OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION :
◾ Eligibility for certification as a Professional Engineer in Canada with specialization in an engineering specialty relevant to the position.

EXPERIENCE:
◾ Considerable* experience in providing engineering services.

◾ Significant** and recent*** experience working with a shipyard to progress the design, construction or maintenance of ship systems.
*Considerable experience is understood to mean the depth and breadth of the experience normally associated with having performed a broad range of various related activities which are normally acquired over a period of at least seven (7) years.
**Significant experience is defined as performed the duties on regular basis for at least two (2) years.
***Recent experience is defined as experience acquired within the last five (5) years.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- The willingness and ability to work overtime to meet operational requirements.
- The willingness and ability to travel within Canada and abroad, including travel by car, rail, ship
and air.
- The willingness and ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when required.
- Willingness and ability to work on the under-construction vessel and on the vessel during tests
and trials.

► HOW DOES THIS HIRING PROCESS WORK?

Stage ➊: Online Application

Stage ➋: Preparing a presentation
Should your application be retained following stage 1, you will be invited to prepare a presentation that will assess some of the knowledge, abilities and Personal Suitabilites. This presentation will ask you to analyze facts/opinions and present your recommendations.

Stage ➌: Interview
Should you be successful with the stage 2, you will be invited to an interview conducted through videoconference. At which point you will be asked to provide an oral presentation based on their previously submitted written presentation. After completion of the presentation, the interview will proceed to the other interview questions.

Stage ➍: Pool Establishment
If successful at all stages, you will be placed on the list of partially-qualified candidates and referred to hiring managers. Candidates may be required to meet asset qualifications for selection purposes and depending on the requirements of the position being staffed.
