Duties

In the Preventive Conservation division, we work with clients to ensure that access to heritage collections, as well as their use, are sustainable over time. We are a dynamic and creative multidisciplinary team that develops innovative solutions, tools and approaches to meet the current and emerging needs of the heritage community.

As an Assistant Preventive Conservation Advisor, you could:
• Provide advice and information to clients related to the preventive conservation of collections;
• Conduct facilities evaluations for the Designation and Indemnification programs of the Department of Canadian Heritage;
• Coordinate environmental monitoring equipment loans;
• Support a variety of ongoing projects.

Work environment

Working at the Canadian Conservation Institute means:

• Collaborating with a team of conservation professionals in conservation treatment, preventive conservation and conservation science;
• Collaborating with specialists in publications, communications and training;
• Working with clients primarily with heritage professionals and institutions (museums, libraries, archives, cultural centres) in Canada;
• Maintaining close connections with organizations and colleagues from around the world to collaborate on research projects or to share their knowledge at professional conferences.

This position is subject to the hybrid work model. In general, the employee appointed to this position should expect to work two days per week from their designated Canadian Heritage location. Our office is located at 1030 Innes Road, Ottawa.

Education (Essential qualification).

1. Diploma from a post-secondary institution in a field relevant to this position or a combination of education, experience and training.

Relevant fields: conservation, preventive conservation, collections management within a program related to museums, archives or libraries.

Acceptable combination: a high school diploma in combination with a few years of relevant work experience and professional development courses.

Degree equivalency

Experience (Essential qualifications).

1. Experience in providing preventive conservation advice, with a focus on reducing risks to heritage collections in storage, transit or on exhibition.

By collections, we refer to a grouping of objects as opposed to an individual object.

2. Experience in contributing to a preventive conservation project focusing on a heritage collection.

The project must involve the application of Heritage preventive conservation techniques to minimize risks to a collection.

Experience (Asset qualifications).

1. Experience in developing or delivering training or developing didactic material.

2. Experience in using a quantitative risk analysis method for cultural heritage (for example, ABC Method, CPRAM).

3. Experience in applying the RE-ORG methodology in a storage reorganization project.

4. Experience in working with or within Indigenous communities or organizations.

Knowledge (Asset qualification).

1. Knowledge of the heritage landscape in Canada, including Indigenous issues.
