The RAP student will be responsible for developing a theoretical framework for integrating prevailing wind data with measures of proximity for point, line, and area air pollution sources. This will be the application of the principles of dispersion modelling for the construction of predictors to be used in land-use regression modelling. The second step will be to work with other members of the group to apply these methods in the Characterization of Aviation-Sourced Air Pollution (CASAP) study and contribute to the drafting of a manuscript for submission in a peer-reviewed scientific journal. The manuscript preparation will constitute the academic requirement of the position. The RAP student will also abide by Health Canada’s code of conduct as well as information technology security and health and safety requirements.
The RAP student will be conducting research in air pollution modelling methodology. Principally, the task is for the integration of wind speed and direction with metrics of proximity for point, line, and area sources. This research involves knowledge of and skills in the management and analysis of data in air pollution, meteorology, land use, and other related fields. Knowledge of statistics, air dispersion modelling, and spatial data retrieval and manipulation is essential. This research is in support of the air pollution exposure research activities at Health Canada’s Air Pollution Exposure Science Section in the Water and Air Quality Bureau of the Healthy Environments Consumer Safety Bureau. This research supports Health Canada’s mandate of understanding the sources and trends of air pollution in Canadian cities.
