Duties

DFO has begun work on advancing a federal response to address Pacific salmon declines, including a long-term strategy for Pacific salmon to more effectively address the steeply declining trends in many Pacific salmon stocks. Under the Pacific Salmon Strategy Initiative (PSSI), several interrelated initiatives have been designed to achieve a commercial Pacific salmon fishery that is biologically sustainable, is better positioned financially, and is capable of generating economic and social benefits for harvesters and communities.
As a Restoration Monitoring Technician, you will support a group of Engineers and Biologists in the assessment, monitoring and maintenance of salmon habitat restoration projects. You will provide technical, logistical and analytical support for field monitoring and assessment studies. Your work will involve field visits for data gathering and writing up reports and recommendations, as part of effectiveness monitoring of salmonid restoration projects undertaken by DFO and its external partners.
As a Fish Culture Technician, you will support Community Advisors and community partners in all aspects of Salmonid Enhancement. Activities include fish culture and supporting delivery of the Stream to Sea program.
Maintenance and repair of existing SEP facilities and habitat projects will also form a part of your duties.
Bringing your knowledge and skills you will plan logistics, identify, organize and prepare equipment and instrumentation, and provide technical support for site visits, inspections, surveys, reviews of projects for effects on the environment and scientific field studies in support of salmonid habitat restoration. You will provide inputs and updates to field monitoring and auditing data and compliance tracking information into computerized databases utilizing a variety of software applications.
A willingness to learn and use new and emerging technologies such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV’s), and mapping software is a must. You will bring office skills using MS Office, and other software, but you will also enjoy working outdoors in the natural environment, and are a team player.
