As a Science Research Manager, in collaboration with colleagues and with input from your team, you will provide leadership and direction to scientific and technical teams that may be spread across Canada. As a member of the management team, you will contribute actively to providing authoritative, relevant and timely information on meteorology, the atmosphere or water to inform the development of policies, regulations and services that meet the needs of Canadians. Intent of the process

The intent of this process is to staff the following (6) six positions:

1. Manager, Atmospheric Numerical Weather Prediction Research within the Meteorological Research Division located in Dorval;
2. Manager, Terrestrial Environmental Numerical Weather Prediction Research within the Meteorological Research Division located in Dorval;
3. Manager, High Impact Weather Research within the Meteorological Research Division located in Toronto;
4. Manager, Analysis and Air Quality Section located in Ottawa (River Road);
5. Research Programs Manager, Watershed Hydrology and Ecology Research Division located in Burlington;
6. Research Program Manager, Aquatic Contaminants and Research Division, located in Burlington and/or Montreal.

A pool may be created to staff vacant positions with various tenures (indeterminate, specified period, deployment, acting, acting extensions, assignment, secondment), language requirements (English Essential, French essential, Bilingual imperative (BBB/BBB, CBC/CBC) and/or security requirements (reliability or secret) within Environment and Climate Change Canada across Canada.

EDUCATION:
Graduation with an acceptable doctoral degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a field of the natural sciences related to the duties of the position, or the employer-approved alternative*

* The employer-approved alternative for the SE classification is an acceptable master’s or bachelor’s degree coupled with acceptable research, training and experience. The degree must be from a recognized post-secondary institution and in scientific fields and specialties related to the duties of the position. The training and experience must clearly demonstrate the ability to do personal research of doctoral degree calibre.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE:
EX1: Recent* and significant** experience in managing scientific programs, including setting direction and priorities and reporting on results.

EX2: Experience collaborating with external partners (e.g. federal departments, other levels of government, non-governmental organizations, academia, international organizations, Indigenous groups) in the development and delivery of scientific research or monitoring projects.

EX3: Experience synthesizing scientific information for decision makers and providing science advice and recommendations to support senior management*** decisions through presentations, briefings or strategic documents.

EX4: Experience managing human**** and financial resources.

* Recent means normally acquired within the past five (5) years

** Significant experience means that which is an integral part of the duties of the candidate and normally acquired over a period of at least two (2) years

*** Senior management equals Director and/or higher level.

**** Candidates must clearly demonstrate that they have directly supervised staff, indicating the number of staff supervised, and performed the following three functions: assigned work/priorities, managed and assessed performance and conducted or particpated to successful staffing actions.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS:

EXPERIENCE:
AEX1: Experience in leading national or international air quality, water quality, hydrology, water quality contaminants and effects, climate or meteorological research projects or programs

AEX2: Recent* and significant** experience in preparing and evaluating scientific research proposals.

AEX3: Experience with modelling or data assimilation of earth systems (atmospheric, environmental systems, chemical transport models).

AEX4: Experience with watershed hydrology and ecological processes or modeling.

AEX5. Experience with contamination fate and transformation and/or ecotoxicological effects processes.
